Rumor: EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens For Canon EOS M May Be Around The Corner!

EF-M 11-22mm

Digicame-info (translated) broke the news just a few minutes ago: It appears that a new lens for the Canon EOS M system is around the corner. It should be an image stabilized 11-22mm f/4-5.6 lens, the EF 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. Unfortunately there are no more specs leaked for this lens, just that the filter diameter will be 55mm. I guess the lens will be very compact.

Such a wide-angle zoom was murmured in the past, so I think the rumor is quite plausible. Moreover, Canon’s Masaya Maeda clearly stated that Canon is working on more lenses for the EOS M system.

If you live in Germany, top rated eBay seller medialand4you (99.5% positive ratings) has a hot deal: Canon EOS M with EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens for ridicolous .

The price of the EOS M tumbled down in the past months, check it in the following shops: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, Canon Canada, Canon USA

How To Install Magic Lantern – A Step-By-Step Video Guide

Given all the (justified) hype around Magic Lantern’s RAW hack more and more Canon users want to install the firmware hack. The most amazing results are obtained with the EOS 5D Mark III, but also a five year old camera that was never thought to shot video, the EOS 50D (here on eBay), can produce amazing results with the Magic Lantern hack.

Dave Dugdale from Learning DSLR Video made a video that shows step-by-step how to install the Magic Lantern hack. As Dave suggests, it is best to install first the stable version of Magic Lantern before playing around with the alpha-releases (or nightly builds) that deliver the RAW video output.

Be sure that the battery is fully charged before starting the installation process. You have to reset the camera to factory settings, then you have to format the memory card. After that you plug the card in you computer and copy the downloaded files on it. Finally, the card goes back in your camera, where you navigate to the firmware update menu. When all is done correctly you will see the screen output below.

Canon Patent: 70-200mm f/4 Lens (Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L II On The Way?)

Canon Patent

Egami (translated) spotted a patent filed by Canon that most probably refers to the next iteration of the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM, released in 2006. Canon has another 70-200 in their lineup, the image stabilized EF 70-200mm f/4L IS.

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x Starts To Ship (and reviews and Canon DLC article)

EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x

It appears that Adorama and B&H started shipping pre-orders of the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x lens. The lens has a price tag of $11,799 – just like a small car. Nevertheless, I am sure this lens will sell well with professional photographers.

There are some good reviews about the 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x. Canon Explorer of Light Peter Read Miller had the opportunity to test the lens at the London Olympics 2012 (source: pixsylated). He says:

So, how does the lens perform? The copy I had was fantastic. I’m not an empirical tester—I just shot the lens daily at the London Olympics for 16 days on my EOS-1D X bodies, almost always wide open and usually under challenging lighting conditions. I think without the extender the sharpness is a match for any Canon prime telephoto and with the extender the performance is as good or better than any prime lens plus extender combination I have ever used. The auto-focus speed on the 1D X body is on a par with the latest Series II lenses. The image-stabilization allowed me to make a sharp photo of the Queen during the opening ceremonies at a shutter speed of 1/100 of a second at 560mm on a monopod.

French site Le Monde de la Photo posted a in-depth review (Google translated) of the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x.

B&H also posted their own review:

The lens is certainly aimed at those who need the ability to work quickly and deftly, and aside from the handling and speed afforded by it, the lens is also capable of producing imagery of the highest quality. The array of low-dispersion elements, fluorite and USD, coupled with the optimized optical structure and lens coatings resulted in imagery that left little to be desired. As with other L series lenses, the quality of imagery, overall performance, and design of the lens is suitable for any working situation, and the added benefit of this lens being able to produce such imagery with the convenience of both a zoom design and integrated 1.4x extender make it truly an effective tool that is ideally situated for sports, wildlife and nature photography.

Finally, for those who want to know the technical background of the lens, there is an article by Canon Digital Learning Center.

The lens should soon be available for rent at Borrow Lenses.
