Latest murmuring from usually well informed Asian sources suggest that Canon might have already put some new gear into the hands of selected photographers. Field tests, so to say.

A rumor surfaced on Weibo suggests:

[…] that Canon’s marketing department has begun training on the new product today to make final preparations for the upcoming release.

According to previous rumors, Canon’s new product EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R1 camera and RF 35mm F1.4L lens will be announced on May 21-23, and the R1 may be announced in development.

We think this rumor has a high likelihood to be reliable. But then: who knows.

This is a new one: rumors about shipping of a camera that has yet to be announced (the EOS R5 Mark II).

Latest has it that the Canon EOS R5 Mark II will start shipping around June or July 2024. The rumores announcement date was late April or early May 2024.

The source of the rumor thinks…:

[…] a May announcement will make the most sense. There are a few things that happen before a major launch and the timeline they follow has been relatively similar for years. We can’t expand on that.

We have also been told from a retail source, that they are preparing for the EOS R5 Mark II to begin shipping in late June/July of this year.

Another source claims that production of the EOS R5 Mark II has begun, how far into the production process they are is unknown at this time.

Take it with a grain of salt, and spend your time snapping pictures.

Canon patent application 2024042622 (japan, published 3/28/2024) discusses optical formulas for two lenses for full frame mirrorless cameras (i.e. fort he RF-mount):

  • 14-20mm f/2

From the patent literature:

  • An object of the present invention is to provide an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that is compact and provides high optical performance over the entire object distance range.
  • [ Background Art] As an imaging optical system, an imaging lens with a half angle of view of more than 50 degrees at the wide-angle end is called an ultra-wide-angle lens, and among them, a bright lens with an F value of 2.8 or less has a wide Suitable for taking advantage of the angle of view and short shutter speed for shooting starry skies and dark places.
