Finally: SIGMA Launches Interchangeable Lenses for Canon RF Mount

Sigma

I guess many of us were waiting for this: the possibility to use Sigma’s excellent lenses natively on the EOS R system, i.e. RF mount. Well, it seems we are there.

Control algorithm including AF drive and communication speed optimization has been developed specifically for Canon RF Mount interchangeable lenses. In addition to realizing high-speed AF, the lens also supports AF-C (Continuous AF), in-camera aberration correction and in-camera image stabilization. The mount is rubber-sealed to cater for use in a variety of environments.

Sigma press release:

SIGMA Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki) is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of interchangeable lenses for Canon RF Mount system. This addition allows users to enjoy high performance, and high quality SIGMA lenses in native mount on their Canon RF Mount system.

Canon EOS R8 Review (does a lot of things really well, D. Abbott)

Canon EOS R8 Review

Here is a Canon EOS R8 review by our favourite gear reviewer.

Canon EOS R8 at a glance:

  • 24.2MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
  • 4K60p 10-Bit Internal Video, Canon Log 3
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ 1.62m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
  • 40 fps Electronic Shutter
  • Movie Digital IS
  • Vertical Movie Mode
  • Microphone Input, Headphone Output
  • Multi-Function Shoe, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth

Dustin Abbott reviewed the Canon EOS R8, and here are his findings. Please note that Mr. Abbott’s review are thorough and exhaustive and you shouldn’t stop at what we feature here. The review covers everything you might want to know about the EOS R8 and I encourage you to have a closer look. From the conclusion:

[given its price] the EOS R8 is destined to be one of Canon’s best selling cameras. Most of the time the camera options near this price point have a smaller APS-C sensor, so this will almost certainly entice some people to take the plunge to the larger full frame sensor and the resulting image quality that comes with it.

If you like the form factor of the EOS RP but are ready for an upgrade, the EOS R8 is a great option. It has a much better sensor, a much better focus system, and far better video specs (this was a real weakness in the EOS RP). There are still some limitations, but this camera does a lot of things really well and can make beautiful images…and be a lot of fun doing it.

My single greatest regret here is the lack of in-body-image-stabilization, as this has become a fairly ubiquitous feature on competing cameras and some of Canon’s best lens matches for this camera don’t have lens stabilization. But other than that I definitely prefer the Canon EOS R8’s ergonomics to, say, Sony’s a7C series of cameras, and the Canon costs less, too.

There a lot of people who likes to be called “reviewer”. Dustin Abbott is one of the few I check when I am about to buy new gear. More Canon EOS R8 review stuff is listed here.

Canon Released A New Specialised Imaging Sensor, The LI5030SA

LI5030SA

Canon has released the LI5030SA, an imaging sensor for industrial and scientific applications, like microscopes, automation, surveillance, machine vision, to name a few.

The Canon LI5030 features a global shutter that simultaneously exposes all 19MP of the sensor’s resolution. Perfect for subject moving with high speed, like propeller blades (seen in countless videos to demonstrate artefacts caused by a rolling shutter). he sensor delivers 5688 x 3334 video resolution at 57.99 fps and 12bit via 24 channels of digital signal output. The LI5030SA family has these siblings: LI5030SAC (color), LI5030SAI (RGBIR, raffic monitoring cameras and industrial cameras that can simultaneously capture visible and near infrared areas), LI5030SAM (monochrome), and LI5030SAN (Naked, no microlens or color filter for electron microscopes and X-ray detection cameras).

Latest murmuring from usually well informed Asian sources suggest that Canon might have already put some new gear into the hands of selected photographers. Field tests, so to say.

A rumor surfaced on Weibo suggests:

[…] that Canon’s marketing department has begun training on the new product today to make final preparations for the upcoming release.

According to previous rumors, Canon’s new product EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R1 camera and RF 35mm F1.4L lens will be announced on May 21-23, and the R1 may be announced in development.

We think this rumor has a high likelihood to be reliable. But then: who knows.

Don’t waste time with rumors; take your camera and go out snapping pictures.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II To Start Shipping In June-July 2024?

This is a new one: rumors about shipping of a camera that has yet to be announced (the EOS R5 Mark II).

Latest has it that the Canon EOS R5 Mark II will start shipping around June or July 2024. The rumores announcement date was late April or early May 2024.

The source of the rumor thinks…:

[…] a May announcement will make the most sense. There are a few things that happen before a major launch and the timeline they follow has been relatively similar for years. We can’t expand on that.

We have also been told from a retail source, that they are preparing for the EOS R5 Mark II to begin shipping in late June/July of this year.

Another source claims that production of the EOS R5 Mark II has begun, how far into the production process they are is unknown at this time.

Take it with a grain of salt, and spend your time snapping pictures.
