So why would you buy this lens when the 24-105mm f/4 L IS is cheaper.
    Has Canon lost it’s mind?

    • Andy

      Smaller
      Lighter
      Better image quality
Better IS (especially when used close up)
Macro function (good enough that you don’t need to buy a separate macro lens)

The 24-105 is not being discontinued anyway so there’s really nothing to complain about.

  • Klaus1a5

sorry andy but your are a marketing victim.

the macro function is pretty useless.. sure not good enough to replace a real macro lens.

you have to come as near as 2 inches for macro shots.

that will make flash photography difficult (shadows from the lens) and most critters will not allow you to come that close.

even photographing flowers will be difficult.
you must be very carefull not to have shadows from the lens.

it´s for the feature list but not very usefull.

    • Andy

Of course the dedicated 100mm macro will be better for macro but you can’t deny benefits of having the functionality of 2 lenses in one.

The main point is that Canon has lost it’s mind, since the 24-105 is excellent. These improvements should have been on a Mark II version of the 24-105mm.

This is just a ploy to get new comers to spend more money.

    • Andy

What kind of new comer spends that much on a lens?

  • Bob B.

This is interesting…I am reading that the IQ on the 24-105 is the same or better than this new lens…
If that is so…your get more reach at 105mm and the older lens with more to offer is at least $600 cheaper???
    Perplexing.
