Finally: SIGMA Launches Interchangeable Lenses for Canon RF Mount

Sigma

I guess many of us were waiting for this: the possibility to use Sigma’s excellent lenses natively on the EOS R system, i.e. RF mount. Well, it seems we are there.

Control algorithm including AF drive and communication speed optimization has been developed specifically for Canon RF Mount interchangeable lenses. In addition to realizing high-speed AF, the lens also supports AF-C (Continuous AF), in-camera aberration correction and in-camera image stabilization. The mount is rubber-sealed to cater for use in a variety of environments.

Sigma press release:

SIGMA Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki) is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of interchangeable lenses for Canon RF Mount system. This addition allows users to enjoy high performance, and high quality SIGMA lenses in native mount on their Canon RF Mount system.

Canon Released A New Specialised Imaging Sensor, The LI5030SA

LI5030SA

Canon has released the LI5030SA, an imaging sensor for industrial and scientific applications, like microscopes, automation, surveillance, machine vision, to name a few.

The Canon LI5030 features a global shutter that simultaneously exposes all 19MP of the sensor’s resolution. Perfect for subject moving with high speed, like propeller blades (seen in countless videos to demonstrate artefacts caused by a rolling shutter). he sensor delivers 5688 x 3334 video resolution at 57.99 fps and 12bit via 24 channels of digital signal output. The LI5030SA family has these siblings: LI5030SAC (color), LI5030SAI (RGBIR, raffic monitoring cameras and industrial cameras that can simultaneously capture visible and near infrared areas), LI5030SAM (monochrome), and LI5030SAN (Naked, no microlens or color filter for electron microscopes and X-ray detection cameras).

Canon Firmware Updates: EOS R3, EOS R5, EOS R6, EOS 1D X Mark III

Canon Eos R3 Firmware Sample Picture User Manual

Canon released a bunch of firmware updates today. See below.

Please note: I am linking Canon Japan through machine translation, because at time of writing the firmware updates are live on Canon Japan’s site.

EOS R3 Firmware Version 1.7.1

  1. When the power zoom adapter PZ-E2/PZ-E2B is attached to a compatible lens, servo zoom can now be performed remotely from EOS Utility and Camera Connect
  2. CF Express cards with a capacity greater than 2TB can now be used up to 2TB
  3. Fixed an issue where the camera would occasionally stop working while using the GPS function
  4. Corrected a phenomenon where error 70 may occur when taking flickerless shots with a shutter speed of 1 second or more
  5. Enhanced security during FTPS connection
  6. Fixed an issue where Mobile File Transfer could not be used when connected to an iPhone that supports USB 3.0 or higher
  7. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred only under certain conditions, where the image was not displayed properly on the viewfinder or monitor and the camera became inoperable (Error 70 may be displayed)
  8. Fixed minor bugs

EOS R5 Firmware Version 2.0.0

  1. When the power zoom adapter PZ-E2/PZ-E2B is attached to a compatible lens, servo zoom can now be performed remotely from EOS Utility and Camera Connect
  2. CF Express cards with a capacity greater than 2TB can now be used up to 2TB
  3. Corrected a rare phenomenon where the camera took a long time to start up, such as when returning from auto power off
  4. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred only under certain conditions, where the image was not displayed properly on the viewfinder or monitor and the camera became inoperable (Error 70 may be displayed)
  5. Fixed minor bugs

EOS R6 Firmware Version 1.8.4

  1. Corrected a rare phenomenon where the camera took a long time to start up, such as when returning from auto power off

Interview With Canon Execs At CP+ 2024 (R1 at Olympics?)

French site Phototrend sat down with a bunch of Canon executives for an interview at CP+ 2024.

While the interview is in French, you can get all the content with a machine translation. Here are some of the discussed topics:

  • Canon plans to feature artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies in future cameras
  • Canon claims to have a 48% share in the global market of interchangeable lens cameras
  • There will be more RF-S lenses
  • Canon does not have any real plan to open the RF mount specifications to other manufacturers but there are non-disclosure agreements with other manufacturers regarding certain types of lenses and their positioning in the market
  • Third party lens manufacturer do not have the same access to camera functions as Canon lenses have, ergo: Canon lenses do perform better than third party lenses
  • Artificial Intelligence will come, and has the primary function to improve autofocus, to assist with subject recognition and with in-camera image processing (low light, noise, aberration corrections)
  • Global shutter doesn’t seem to come to consumer cameras any time soon
  • Canon has been asked many times about the EOS R1, the execs say, but they can not say when it will be released. However, this is the year of the Olympics and from what I got from the machine translated interview, some select photographers might testing the EOS R1 during the games.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Has Been Discontinued

Canon EOS 6d Mark Ii

Please note: the original post mentioned the EOS R6 Mark II, that was obviously nonsense and a mistake.

It appears the Canon EOS 6D Mark II has reached end of life, at least what concerns the production.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II at a glance:

  • 26.2MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 7 Image Processor
  • 45-Point All-Cross Type AF System
  • Full HD Video at 60 fps; Digital IS
  • 3″ 1.04m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Movie Servo AF
  • Native ISO 40000, Expanded to ISO 102400
  • 6.5 fps Shooting; Time-Lapse & HDR Movie
  • Built-In GPS, Bluetooth & Wi-Fi with NFC
  • Dust and Water-Resistant; SD Card Slot

Sources from Japan suggest that the EOS 6D Mark II is no longer produced. The EOS 6D Mark II is still available at major resellers, though.

Our Canon EOS 6D Mark II coverage is listed here.
