Here is a new Canon patent application, and again it is about lenses for the RF mount.

Canon patent application 2020-64176 discusses optical formulas for an RF 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6 and an RF 100-500mm f/5.6-6.4 lens, both are for the EOS R full frame mirrorless system.

  • Focal length: 72.86 133.96 289.00 mm
  • F number: 3.75 4.66 5.83
  • Half angle ov view: 16.54 9.17 4.28
  • Image height: 21.64 21.64 21.64 mm
  • Lens length: 162.01 202.44 237.12 mm
  • Back focus: 13.80 31.02 57.79 mm

RF 100-500mm f/5.6-6.4

  • Zoom ration: 4.75
  • Focal length: 102.00 220.00 485.00 mm
  • F number: 5.69 6.14 6.43
  • Half angle of view: 11.98 5.62 2.55
  • Image height: 21.64 21.64 21.64 mm

RF Mount Macro Lenses For The EOS R Might Be In The Works, Patents Suggest

RF Mount Macro

I think it’s just logic to expect that Canon will continuously release RF mount versions of most of the lenses currently existing for the EF mount. RF mount macro lenses for sure too.

Two Canon patent applications in Japan (2020-60660A and 2020-60661A, spotted by Hi Lows Note), show that Canon R&D departments are working on such lenses, and we think here too we have a patent application that might hit the market sooner or later. Optical formulas for RF mount macro lenses with focal lengths of 90mm, 100mm and 180mm, all f/2.8, are discussed in the patent applications.

Here Is Another Canon Patent For IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization)

In Body Image Stabilization

Here is one more Canon patent dealing with IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization). We’ll see this technology soon on the upcoming Canon EOS R5.

Canon patent application US20200120251 discusses technology and means of implementation of IBIS. Although the images in the patent literature depict a DSLR, we have no doubt IBIS will first be seen on a Canon mirrorless camera.

From the patent abstract:

An image pickup apparatus which makes the load applied to a movable unit when it is displaced nearly uniform. The movable unit controlled by a control unit is capable of being in at least a predetermined direction. A first flexible board has a first connecting portion connected to the movable unit, a first wiring portion extended from the first connecting portion in a first direction different from a direction of an optical axis, and a second connecting portion placed at an end of the first wiring portion and connected to the control unit. A second flexible board has a third connecting portion connected to the movable unit, a second wiring portion extended from the third connecting portion in a second direction different from the direction of the optical axis, and a fourth connecting portion placed at an end of the second wiring portion and connected to the control unit.

Canon Patent For RF 8mm f/4 Circular Fisheye Lens For EOS R System

Circular Fisheye

So many Canon patents for RF mount lenses. Here is another one, and it’s for a circular fisheye lens.

Canon patent application 2020-56995 (Japan) discusses the optical formula for an RF 8mm f/1.4 circular fisheye lens for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless camera system.

  • Focal length: 8.10 mm
  • F number: 4.00
  • Half angle of view: 90.84
  • Image height: 11.50 mm
  • Lens length: 66.13 mm
  • Back focus: 13.21 mm

The Canon EOS R System Might Be Used To Produce VR Footage, Patent Suggests

Canon Eos R

Is Canon planning some VR (Virtual Reality) production system based on the Canon EOS R camera system? A patent application appears to suggest exactly this.

Canon patent application 2020-42197A (Japan) discusses optical formulas for a dual view anamorphic optic for 35mm full-frame mirrorless cameras (i.e. the Canon EOS R system).

  • Focal length: vertical 7.44 mm, horizontal 5,57 mm
  • F number: 4.00, 2.81
  • Half angle of view: 90, 90
  • Image height: 11,75 mm, 8.75 mm
  • Lens length: 100.00 mm
  • Back focus: 15.92 mm

Intriguing, isn’t it? What plans does Canon have with the EOS R system and the RF mount? At least it has become very clear that Canon is very committed to their new full frame mirrorless system.
