  • Weather-Sealed Brass Bayonet Mount
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm
  • Minimum Focus Distance: 10.2″

Photography Blog reviewed the new Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 ART lens.

Excerpts from the conclusion:

The 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art is a surprising, but very welcome, addition to Sigma’s ever growing Art range of premium lenses, offering a faster aperture of f/2.8 at the expense of 2mm in focal length when compared to the very similar Sigma 12-24mm F4 DG HSM Art lens, whilst being cheaper than it’s slightly older sibling (at least in the US anyway) and additionally offering much better weather-sealing.

Image quality is excellent. Chromatic aberrations are very well controlled, bokeh is surprisingly good despite the ultra-wide-angle nature of the lens, barrel distortion is impressively well controlled, and the Super Multi-Layer coating successfully prevents contrast loss attributable to flare.

[…]  the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art’s build quality is once again reassuringly excellent, although it’s also one of the heaviest wide-angle zooms that we’ve ever tested. Auto-focusing is quiet and quick […] Read the review…

Canon EOS M50 video review (Cinema 5D)

Canon EOS M50

Canon EOS M50 at a glance:

  • 24.1MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD

  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC, Bluetooth
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • ISO 100-25600, Extended ISO 51200
  • Combination 5-Axis Image Stabilization

Another review to learn if the Canon EOS M50 (canon rumors) is the best vlogging camera for those on a budget.

Cinema5D reviewed the new EOS M50, and writes:

The Canon EOS M50 is a nice, powerful and affordable little entry-level camera for people who want an interchangeable lens camera without having to schlepp around a huge amount of kit. The video function is very good mainly because of the incredible Dual Pixel Autofocus in HD, but the 4K is clearly an afterthought and can’t really be used in practice much because of the crop and the lacking Dual-Pixel AF. The main purpose of this camera will be uncomplicated family shots or vlogging, for both of which HD is enough. It can be used for entry-level filmmakers who want to start working with interchangeable lenses, as long as they are happy with a 1080p output. Read the review.

The Canon EOS M50 can be pre-ordered, starting at $779.

Interview with Canon execs: increased competition allows us to level-up

Canon EOS M50

DPReview posted an interview with Canon executives taken at CP+. They interviewed Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi, Group Executive of Imaging Communications Business Group, Go Tokura, Chief Executive Officer of Canon’s Image Communications Products Operation, and Naoya Kaneda, Advisory Director and Group Executive of Canon’s Optical Business Group.

Obviously, the interviewer asks about Canon’s latest mirrorless camera, the EOS M50 (canon rumors). Some excerpts from the interview:

How important is it for Canon to add higher-end mirrorless products to your lineup?

At Canon we have what’s called a ‘full lineup strategy’. This means that we want to satisfy all of the demands in the market, so we have mirrorless and also DSLR, which combined makes an EOS hierarchy. We want to fill the gaps to satisfy customer demands across the board […]

The EOS M50 offers 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, but not at the same time. Is there a technical reason for this limitation?

With the EOS 5D Mark IV, we do offer 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, so technically it is feasible. But given the position of the M50 in the lineup, we can’t include all of the features available in a product like the 5D IV […] [editor’s note: this sounds very much like “we won’t give it to you because the M50 is not expensive enough]

Another manufacturer that we spoke to estimated that Canon would have a full-frame mirrorless camera within a year. Is that realistic?

That would be nice, wouldn’t it? [editor’s note: the reference is to Mr. Kenji Tanaka, Sony executive, who said he thinks within a year both Canon and Nikon will have launched a full frame mirrorless camera]

Read the interview at DPReview.

Yes Canon, it would be nice to have a full frame mirrorless camera (possibly with EF mount). Just do it.

Canon EOS M50 best vlogging camera? Kai W inquires in his video review

Kai W, alias Kaiman Wong, posted his full video review of the brand new Canon EOS M50.

Beside the sleek and stylish design, the first time of 4K video on a Canon consumer camera, and all the other bells and whistles that come with the EOS M50, the question many want to hear answered is if the M50 is the new best vlogging tool for people on a budget. My personal opinion is yes, but watch and hear Kai to get the whole picture.

Canon itself said they see the EOS M50 as a “strategic model“. In recently published documents of the company’s Corporate Strategic Conference, they stated “we will go on the offensive and work to expand our sales in the mirrorless camera market“.

This Photographer switched back to Canon from Sony, here is why

canon rumors

We usually see a lot of post/articles where photographers explain they switched away from Canon, usually to Sony or Fuji.

Photographer Marc Schultz leaved Canon for Sony, and now he is coming back. He lists 5 reason for his switch back to Canon.

  1. Better Autofocus for Video
  2. Canon Log
  3. Better Color Science
  4. Ease Of Use
  5. Feel In The Hand

I think the first 3 points don’t need much of a discussion, especially Canon having a much better color rendering than the competition. The last 2 points, “ease of use” and “feel in the hand” are rarely underlined when people compares Canon ergonomics to the competition’s solutions. Canon not only has a great interface and menu system, but as Marc Schultz says about holding a Canon camera in his hands:

One of the most important things, something often less emphasized by others, is how a camera feels in your hand when shooting. When I am clutching a Canon DSLR, I always feel like it is just the perfect fit and feel, which gives me a relaxed confidence when shooting. This is something that is very necessary in my opinion in order to stay focused on what you are shooting, and without being distracted by the awkward or uncomfortable shape of a camera that you don’t like.

Couldn’t agree more. These things are as much important as sensor resolution or fancy features.
