Canon EOS 5DS review (jaw-dropping image quality, Photography Blog)

5ds

Photography Blog got their Canon EOS 5DS and they are testing it without a break. Now they posted the full review. The EOS 5DS gets a “Highly Recommended” and a rating of 4.5/5.

Excerpts from the conclusion:

The Canon EOS 5Ds combines the proven design of the popular 5D Mark III with jaw-dropping image quality from the new 50.6 megapixel sensor.

The sheer level of detail that can obtained from the 5Ds and a high-quality lens like the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is difficult to ignore once you’ve experienced it, though, so if you can commit both financially and in terms of time to the Canon EOS 5Ds, we’d whole-heartedly recommend it.

The Canon EOS 5Ds has inherited some extra design features from the EOS 7D Mk II which make it the best designed 5-series camera to date.

[…] as we’ve discovered after shooting thousands of images with the 5Ds and a variety of older and newer lenses, only the latest and greatest lenses together with careful technique are good enough to get the absolute best out of that 50 megapixel sensor.

Canon EOS 5DS R review (image quality superb, Amateur Photographer)

EOS 5DS

Amateur Photographer reviewed the Canon EOS 5DS R. From the conclusion:

There’s little doubt that the Canon EOS 5DS R is one of the most impressive cameras we’ve ever seen. With its 50.6MP sensor, robust build, and reliable metering and autofocus, it’s sure to become a favourite with working photographers for whom ultimate resolution really matters. Indeed, with 20% higher linear resolution than 36MP cameras, it lays down the gauntlet to Sony and Nikon to play catch-up again, although it would be naive to expect this to take long.
[…] Image quality is superb, and the ‘fine detail’ picture style is capable of packing practically all the captured detail into the camera’s JPEGs. I’d still expect most users to shoot raw, but it’s great that JPEGs are much more usable than on recent Canon DSLRs. The only caveat is that low ISO dynamic range still doesn’t quite match its peers, so you can’t dig as much detail out of deep shadows as you can from cameras such as the Nikon D810.

Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R resolution tests published

5ds

LensRentals posted the results of their initial testing of the Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R. They used the following lenses to test the sensor: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4, Zeiss 21mm f/2.8, , Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Otus, and Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II.

In the conclusion they write:

Just as it was the Nikon high resolution cameras were released, it will take months of testing and photographer experience to determine which lenses do exactly what with the new cameras. But it’s not a critical thing to know at first. Every lens will provide better on the new cameras, at least in the center of the image. How much of a difference will range from noticeably better, to “wow” depending upon the lens, type of photography, and subject matter.

Canon Rebel T6s review (DPReview)

Rebel T6s
Canon Rebel T6s

Photographic authority DPReview posted their full review of the new Canon Rebel T6s (EOS 760D). From the conclusion:

[Rebel T6s] image quality is on par with the best of its peers and the camera is capable of creating beautiful photos. Dynamic range performance lags behind Sony’s state of the art sensors. While this will likely grate at enthusiast photographers, whether it will matter to the majority of Rebel buyers is debatable. For someone who wants nice photos of a vacation or family event and who plans to shoot mostly in JPEG, there’s a lot to like.

Now that Canon has released two Rebels simultaneously, the biggest question for many is less likely to be ‘Should I get a Rebel?’ and more likely to be ‘Which Rebel should I get?’ From our perspective the answer is pretty clear. Unless you’re really stretched to spend the extra money, the T6s is quite a bit more camera than the T6i. That extra cash gets you a rear thumb wheel, top plate LCD, and continuous AF in live view. In fact, if this tracking AF pushes you to shoot in live view to capture moving subjects, then this feature alone justifies the extra cost.

I agree that you should by the Rebel T6s/EOS 760D instead of the Rebel T6i/EOS 750D. You’ll pay $100 more for the T6s/760D, but there is a lot you get for the bucks.
