Photography Blog reviewed Canon’s latest APS-C DSLR, the Canon EOS 90D.

They gave the EOS 90D a rating of 4.5/5. From their conclusion:

The Canon EOS 90D is a nice camera to use if you like the traditional styling and handling of a DSLR, while if you’re already equipped with a range of EF/EF-S lenses then it makes a lot of sense to make the 90D your next purchase.

In some ways it’s good to see that Canon still cares about its DSLR-audience, but we have suspicions that the 90D could be one of the last DSLRs to be announced by the camera giant, with the future being tilted towards more favourably towards mirrorless as time goes in. If you’re a traditionalist this could be one of your last chances to get hold of a DSLR as we know them today.

[…] the Canon EOS 90D is a great option for those who like DSLRs. Being a good all-rounder it’s good for those who shoot lots of different kinds of subject. It does well at sports and action, as well as being suited to landscape, portraits and pretty much any kind of subject you care to shoot. It’s also reasonably priced for what you get, so it comes highly recommended.

DPReview reviewed the new Canon EOS 90D, Canon’s latest APS-C DSLR.

They gave the EOS 90D a scoring of 85%. Here are some excerpts from their conclusion:

Canon’s latest enthusiast APS-C DSLR represents a solid leap forward in image quality for this line. The 90D, along with its mirrorless near-twin the EOS M6 II, both share what is at the time of publishing, the highest resolution APS-C sensor on the market. It offers outstanding Raw detail capture and noise performance, up there with other class-leaders like the Sony a6400. Canon JPEG color continues to be a favorite, but Canon’s default JPEG noise reduction continues to be overly aggressive – fortunately, this can be dialed down.

[…] Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus in live view […] is excellent, with great coverage and accuracy. Face and eye detect AF both work with good reliability, whether shooting stills or video.

[…] In terms of ergonomics, the 90D is excellent. Its large comfortable grip and sizable optical finder with 100% coverage are something that set it apart from its mirrorless APS-C competition. The body is also weather-sealed and well-built, with well-placed controls.

Seems Canon landed another winner here. I own the Canon EOS 80D, which happens to be my favourite camera for the time being, and to me it appears Canon managed to further improve the xxD line with the EOS 90D.

Where Is The Canon EOS R One Year After Its Announcement?

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

Canon EOS R at a glance:

The Canon EOS R was announced one year ago. Let’s take a look back and see how it holds up a year later. How are the specs compared to Nikon and Sony? Does it hold up well or not? The video below by Jared Polin tries to shed some light.

Canon will soon (September 26, 2019) release a firmware update for the Canon EOS R which will significantly improve autofocus performance.

The Yasuhara Anthy 35mm f/1.8 Is A High-quality, Small But Fast Prime For The Canon EOS R

Yasuhara Anthy 35mm F/1.8

Yasuhara Anthy 35mm f/1.8 at a glance:

  • Focal Length: 35mm
  • Aperture Blade: 9
  • Aperture: f1.8 – f16
  • Elements: 9 elements in 7 groups
  • Coatings: Multicoated
  • Weather-Sealed: No
  • Minimum Focus Distance: 0.4m
  • Filter Threads: 52mm
  • Weight: 15oz

More and more companies, be they small or big, are starting to invest in the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system, and build lenses for it.

Japanese company Yasuhara launched the Yasuhara Anthy 35mm f/1.8. Our friend Alik Griffin reviewed it.

From Alik’s conclusion:

If you’re looking for a lens for shooting at night or for black and white photography this lens is great, but for general use, it’s by no means perfect and it does have quite a few flaws. Whether those flaws are deal-breaking or not, you’ll have to decide that based on how you shoot.

Personally I’ve been using it way more than I thought I would be simply because of the small size. There just aren’t a lot of full-frame f1.8 lenses that can do what this lens does that are also this small and the build quality is fantastic.

For night shooting it performs really well since you don’t see the vignetting, and it doesn’t have any serious issues with astigmatism like the Canon RF 35mm f1.8.

It does have some sort of rear reflection thing going on that I showed in some test shots, but I haven’t seen it yet in real-world shooting.
The most annoying thing to me is that purple vignetting. It’s not easy to fix and requires quite a bit of noodling to completely remove. It’s best to just make a preset which is what I’ve done.

[…]

For those shooters that shoot both full-frame and APS-C, this lens could be an incredible option. Canon and Nikon haven’t released their APS-C cameras for their new mounts yet, but I could see this lens being a great lens for those cropped systems since you won’t see that purple vignetting when cropped and you will see an improvement in those corners.
In terms of color, contrast, sharpness, and bokeh, for a lens this size it’s really nice it’s but it is a little soft wide open. For $299 this could be a pretty fun lens to mess around with and once you learn to work with the strengths and avoid the weakness you can really make it work. But for the full-frame shooter that’s just starting out, it could be a bit of a challenge to work with.

For APS-C shooters you will see slightly better contrast and color to what Meike and 7Artisans are doing, but with the Anthy35 you get a dramatically superior build. Of course, the price reflects this.

Alik Griffin’s review of the Yasuhara Anthy 35mm f/1.8 touches every possible feature of the lens, and comes with a rich set of sample and test photos. Highly recommended review. If you prefer, you can read his first impression of the Yasuhara Anthy 35mm f/1.8. The Yasuhara Anthy 35mm f/1.8 will be available in Fall 2019, can be preordered at $299.

Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II Review (image quality a strong point, DPReview)

Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark Ii

Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II key features:

  • 20.2MP 1″ Stacked CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • 5x Optical Zoom f/1.8-2.8 Lens
  • 24-120mm (35mm Equivalent)

DPReview reviewed the new Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II.

From their conclusion:

Notably, the G5 X II feels super responsive – this was a big weak point of its predecessor. But on the Mark II, here’s no shot-to-shot lag, it reacts to your inputs instantly, and even the 30fps Raw burst mode doesn’t slow the camera down too much. This responsiveness makes for a connected experience when you’re out and about, taking pictures.

And speaking of pictures, image quality is a strong point – JPEGs have pleasing color, but to get the most out of your shadow regions, we’d boost the Auto Lighting Optimizer to ‘high.’ The lens offers a fast aperture and a versatile zoom range, and is a good performer, if not outstanding, particularly at wider focal lengths. Raw capture is generally comparable to the competition, meaning it’s quite good, and in-camera Raw conversion lets you tweak your Raw files ‘on the go’ before Wi-Fi transferring them to your smartphone for social sharing.
