Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark I vs PowerShot G5 X Mark II Comparison

Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark Ii

ePHOTOzine compared the new Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II to its predecessor, the PowerShot G5 X.

From their verdict:

The Canon Powershot G5X Mark II offers a number of improvements, including high-speed continuous shooting (up to 30fps), 4K video recording, and updated white balance options, as well as an extended ISO range. There’s also a new design, that makes the camera lighter, and slightly more compact. However, if you don’t need 4K video recording, and want a flash hot-shoe, then the original G5X offers a fairly compelling package, particularly as it’s price is quite competitive.

If you need (or want) 4K video recording, then the G5 X Mark II is the one to go for out of these two cameras, and the additional zoom range of the new 5x optical zoom lens is welcome. The new 5x optical zoom lens certainly impresses, delivering sharp, detailed photos across the zoom range. If video is your primary aim, then the G7X Mark III, could be worth a look as it adds in a microphone socket.

Tamron SP 35mm f/1.4 Di USD (F045) Review (editor’s choice, ePHOTOzine)

ePHOTOzine reviewed the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.4 Di USD (F045) lens.

The SP 35mm f/1.4 Di USD (F045) is getting a lot of positive reviews, and this on is no exception. Tamron itself calls it the “finest lens” in their history.

From ePHOTOzine’s conclusion:

The performance is excellent, the handling is excellent and this puts the Tamron on a par with the best alternative 35mm f/1.4 lenses, and, it must be said, at an attractive price. Yes, it is still expensive, but that is the price we have to pay for such high quality.

The only question is whether or not the photographer finds 35mm to be the right focal length on full frame. For some it may fall between being truly wide angle and being long enough for more flattering portraits. For others it will be the perfect standard lens, perhaps especially for those involved with classic street photography or small group portraits.

If the specification is right though, then this lens hits the spot and yet again Tamron have that coveted accolade and another Editor’s Choice. Is this Tamron’s best ever lens? Frankly, there have been quite a few that could vie for that position, but one thing is certain, that the new Tamron SP 35mm f/1.4 Di USD lens is right at the top of Tamron’s game.

Dustin Abbott completed his exhaustive review of the Sigma 500mm F/4 OS Sport lens.

From his conclusion:

The Sigma 500mm F/4 OS HSM Sport is a unique lens.  It’s a third party option competing in a space dominated by first party lenses.  It’s an expensive lens that doubles as a relative value.

[…]

The size, weight, and expense of a lens like the 500S makes it clear that it isn’t for everyone.  Lenses like this take a lot of skill to use well (and strength, too, if you try to handhold it).  A lens like the Sigma 60-600mm OS Sport is going to be more affordable and versatile, and, if you have a tight budget, a lens like the Sigma 150-600mm OS C can give you some incredible images for under a thousand bucks.  But there’s no question that the 500S gives you a different kind of versatility.  The ability to shoot in more lighting situations with both better autofocus performance and image quality.  The ability to get incredible subject isolation.  And, when adding teleconverters to the mix, an incredible amount of reach while retaining autofocus ability.

The whole review is available as video review.

D. Abbott’s review comes with a rich set of test shots and discusses every aspect of the Sigma 500mm F/4 OS Sport lens. If you’re looking for this lens we recommend you have a look at Dustin Abbott’s review.
