Canon EOS RP vs EOS R vs EOS 6D Mark II Dynamic Range Comparison

Canon Eos Rp

FroKnowsPhoto (aka Jared Polin) compared the dynamic range of the Canon EOS RP, EOS R and EOS 6D Mark II.

I never cared much about dynamic range but it seems t’s a hot topic for a lot of people out there. The raw files used by Jared Polin can be downloaded here.

In a recent interview with Canon execs, the company confirmed that the EOS RP has the same sensor as the EOS 6D Mark II, with the exception of different microlenses.

Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 Review (excellent sharpness even wide open, DPReview)

Canon EF-M 32mm

At a glance:

  • EF-M-Mount Lens/APS-C Format
  • 51.2mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Aperture Range: f/1.4 to f/16
  • One Aspherical Element
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Gear-Type STM Stepping AF Motor
  • Rounded 7-Blade Diaphragm

DPReview reviewed the Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4, Canon’s latest lens for the EOS M system.

The Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 seems to be cute little performer, not an L lens but for sure one of Canon’s better user oriented lenses. From the conclusion:

Focusing performance is good and optical performance is solid across the aperture range. This kind of lens begs to be shot at wide apertures, and it’s good to find that sharpness is excellent, even at F1.4. Coma is also extremely well-controlled, making this lens useful for wide-aperture cityscapes and probably also astrophotography, as well as more everyday subjects like portraiture. Occasional LoCA might be a concern depending on what you shoot, but it’s well-controlled compared to results from most competitive lenses.

[…] the EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM […] takes up little space, and is clearly quite capable of delivering great results across many different situations. If Canon builds out the EF-M range with additional prime options of a similar standard, we may be looking at a very different system before long. Read the review…

Let’s hope those lenses come sooner than later.

Latest Canon EOS RP Hands-On And First Impression Reviews

Canon Eos Rp

All Canon EOS RP stuff is listed here. Early hands-on and first impression reviews are here. A rather interesting interviews with Canon execs is featured here. The EOS RP user manual can be downloaded.

Here is a round-up of first impression and hands-on previews on the brand new Canon EOS RP (starts shipping soon).

The Phoblographer‘s first impression (and huge set of sample pictures):

It’s not at all a bad camera, but it surely feels like Canon has held back. I think that if Canon really wanted the entry level crowd that they could have found ways to put more features into this camera despite the already low price point. As it is, the EOS RF system still isn’t even a year old yet. I can see that Canon really wanted to draw over customers

Digital Camera World‘s early verdict on the EOS RP:

Invariably there will be disappointment from users who were expecting (read: dearly hoping) that this would be a professional version of the EOS R to rival the EOS-1D X or 5DS/R. It’s unfair to judge the Canon EOS RP for what it isn’t, though. This is a remarkable feat of engineering, effectively cramming the power and performance of a 765g 6D Mark II into such a tiny 485g body while also adding 4K video and mirrorless benefits such as an EVF.

Imaging Resource‘s first shots with the EOS RP.

DPReview‘s shooting experience with the EOS RP (and sample photos):

[…] the RP isn’t without competition. Sony’s habit of keeping older models in its lineup, then continually dropping the price means you can currently get an a7 II for around $1000 and an original a7 with lens for the same money. But, for all the apparent technical limitations, I think a lot of people might choose the Canon’s more accessible shooting experience and attractive JPEGs over what now look like Sony’s works-in-progress models.

DPReview’s first impression (below):

ePhotozine‘s Canon EOS RP hands-on:

[…] the full frame mirrorless EOS RP features its maker’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, which functions down to the equivalent of -5EV. The camera has Eye Detection AF on board too, which will track moving subjects. On top of this there are a whopping 4,779 selectable AF positions, while Single Point Spot AF is a newly included feature that the manufacturer believes is a first – not just in terms of its own mirrorless series, but anyone’s.

Hands-on review at SLR Lounge (with sample photos); they say:

A fantastic entry-level full-frame camera that comes in a small body, and with an even smaller price tag. I was shocked at the image quality I was able to pull out of a camera that costs only $1,299.

[…] this is the ideal camera for an enthusiast looking to jump into a full-frame mirrorless system without breaking the bank.

Canon EOS RP preview at Photography Blog:

Canon have certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons with the pricing of the new EOS RP camera, significantly undercutting the likes of the Sony A7 III, Nikon Z6 and Panasonic Lumix S1. Sure, it can’t match those cameras in terms of out-and-out specs, particularly on the video side, but Canon’s name and that aggressive price tag should ensure that the RP sells in large numbers, bringing full-frame mirrorless to an even wider audience in the process

The Canon EOS RP Is Not A Filmmaker’s Darling

Canon Eos Rp

Latest on the EOS RP is listed here. Hands-on and first impression reviews are here. A rather interesting interviews with Canon execs is featured here. The EOS RP user manual can be downloaded.

The Canon EOS RP is already getting a lot of positive feedback from the shooter’s community. The filmmakers are less fond of Canon’s entry level full frame mirrorless camera.

Below you see a set of hands-on/first impression (p)reviews from various movie making folks. I’m not so much into movies but as a stills photog I can’t wait to get an EOS RP. For more photographer oriented previews see here.

Maybe not everything below should be taken too seriously, especially not the last video.

This Photographer Switched From Sony To The Canon EOS R, Here Is Why

Eos R

Photographer Tyson Robichaud switched to the Canon EOS R after years using Sony cameras (and other brands too). In a recent post he reviews the Canon EOS R, compares the EOS R to the Sony a7R II, and explains why he switched to Canon.

Tyson’s review is a real world review, with many sample photos, ISO test charts and more useful insights. As you can see below, Canon’s sensor is still behind Sony’s when it comes to high ISO performance.

In his conclusion he writes:

The EOS R has a lot going for it, and a few bizarre omissions/inclusions in my personal opinion.  How those sit with any given shooter will certainly come down to personal needs and expectations for the cost.

Short and sweet, the image quality is still behind the better performing, comparably priced full frame cameras right now.  That, in and of itself may be enough for many to steer clear and go elsewhere with their hard earned money.  The tradeoff for that IQ, in my experience, has been a much better and more solidly operating tool in most every regard.  Less the omission of in body stabilization, and some of the odd and arguably excusable/ignorable design choices, I find the EOS R to be provide a better shooting experience for me, compared to my Sony cameras.  Canon, for their faults, have always been great at building a camera that integrates well with the shooter, and photographic task at hand.

If you want to learn about the Canon EOS R we highly recommend Tyson’s review. It’s the kind of camera review I read before deciding which camera to buy.

Yesterday Canon announced their second full frame mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS RP.
