Canon is going to attend Photokina 2018

Photokina 2018

Last week a rumor suggesting Canon (and other brands) may not be present at Photokina 2018 surfaced on the web. The rumor started because Elinchrom announced they would skip Photokina 2018.

It turned out to be wrong. Today the Photokina exhibition published a press release where they list a bunch of brands with already secured stands, among them is Canon.

Press release:

photokina 2018: high exhibitor demand

Five months prior to the start of the 35th edition of photokina on 26 September 2018, the organisers are expecting every single exhibitor space in the halls in Cologne to be filled. Leading companies of the industry like Arri, Canon, Cewe, DJI, Epson, Fujifilm, Kodak Alaris, Leica, Manfrotto, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Profoto, Sigma, Sony, Tamron and Zeiss have already secured their stands at the coming event. The application phase is also moving full speed ahead for photokina 2019.

Has the Canon EOS 7D Mark II reached End of Life, replacement on the horizon?

Canon Eos R7 Canon EOS 7D Mark III

In the last weeks we got some hints that the Canon EOS 7D Mark II is reaching its end of life, i.e. it may soon be discontinued.

Mails in my inbox, coming from major, authorised US retailers, with headlines like “Want a Canon EOS 7D Mark II? Get it while you can!” or “grab it!” may be a hint that the glorious EOS 7D Mark II is indeed about to be discontinued. Moreover, we got word from readers that smaller retailers in Europe appear to clear stock of the EOS 7D Mark II.

Does this mean the Canon EOS 7D Mark III will be announced in 2018? It may. We have always been told that Canon would announce the EOS 7D Mark III in 2018, with a first batch of rumors stating it would happen before Summer 2018, and then some other rumors suggesting the EOS 7D Mark III may be announced towards Q4 2018.

Specification-wise we still know very little about the successor of the highly popular EOS 7D Mark II. Please note that there are two specification lists making the rounds on the web. One which originates from us, another which does not. Although this specification list was attributed to us, it didn’t come from us.

The bits we got over the last months:

  • newly developed 28MP sensor, said to introduce a new Canon APS-C sensor generation (we leaked this first)
  • more video-oriented
  • some sort of 4K video (though no details, we leaked this first)
  • tiltable touch-screen
  • new generation of Dual Pixel AF
  • more upscale than the EOS 7D Mark II
  • richer feature set compared to the 7D Mark II
  • same introductory price as the EOS 7D Mark II

All Canon EOS 7D Mark III rumors are listed here.

Do you think the Canon EOS 7D Mark III will be announced in 2018?

Canon set to release two full frame mirrorless cameras?

Full Frame Mirrorless

Yet another Canon full frame mirrorless camera rumor.

It’s suggested Canon is developing two prosumer grade, full frame mirrorless cameras. One more pro-oriented than the other. According to the rumor, Canon will first announce the pro-oriented mirrorless camera, then, after 6 or 8 months, the camera that’s supposed to be less feature rich.

The EF mount rumor is also back. It’s rumored Canon may have a “really nice solution for EF lenses on the full frame mirrorless body”, which does neither suggest it will or will not have an EF mount nor if an adapter is on Canon’s agenda.

All in all nothing new. Besides all the murmuring and rumor-recycling, we know very little about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera. All tidbits we collected and were told in the past are listed here. Please note that none of the following has been confirmed to us so far:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • The latest bit of info I got suggests Canon will announce a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor having a resolution of 36-38MP.
  • Announcement may come for Photokina 2018 (September), or later in 2019 Q1.

At the end of the day, there is just one thing we can be sure about: Canon is set to announce a full frame mirrorless camera within a year. Here at CW we know since a while and reported it. Even Sony’s CEO said that Canon will announce a FF mirrorless before Q1 2019.

All Canon full frame mirrorless rumors are listed here.

Off Brand: Nikon’s upcoming mirrorless cameras leaked through certification authority

Mirrorless Cameras

It seems three upcoming Nikon mirrorless cameras leaked through an Indonesian certification authority, according to Nokishita.

  • Equipment: Digital camera
  • Brand: Nikon
  • Model: N1711

No idea if Nikon’s future full frame mirrorless camera is among these three cameras. An announcement will most likely come not earlier than September 2018, if not later.

Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera may also already have leaked through certification authorities. Here too, an announcement is expected not earlier than September, or in early 2019 before Photokina 2019 (which happens in May)

Canon EOS 5Ds Mark II now rumored to be a 2019 affair

Eos 5ds R Mark Ii

As we always stated, the replacement for the Canon EOS 5Ds and 5Ds R is not going to be announced in 2018. It’s met likely an announcement we will see not earlier than 2019. No surprisingly, this is now making rounds on the web.

Some people is trying to suggest Canon’s prototype 120MP APS-H sensor (or some sensor built on it) may  find its way into the next EOS 5Ds. That’s crap. The EOS 5Ds Mark II will have a resolution bump, but neither an APS-H sensor nor 120MP.

Stay tuned.
