Latest rumor has it that Canon might be set to release more cameras featuring a stacked sensor.

Stacked sensor was first introduced with the Canon EOS R3. The source of the rumor claims that Canon will release three new cameras with a stacked sensor. One might be the fabled EOS R1, another one might be the EOS R5 Mark II. Don’t get too excited, though.

The rumor doesn’t come with any consolidating argument nor with a timeline or release date. It’s all very speculative and we recommend you take it with a grain of salt. if ever, these sensors will be seen in 2024.

Stay tuned.

Canon Might Announce The RF 200-500mm f/4L IS In Q4 2023, And For $15,999, Rumor

RF 200-500mm

Canon might be set to release the long rumored (!) RF 200-500mm f/4L IS lens sometimes during Q4 2023, i.e. soon.

The RF 200-500mm f/4L IS will come with hefty price tag, though. The rumored price is $15.999 – not everyone’s budget. Says the source of the rumor:

[RF 200-500mm f/4L IS] the will be the RF replacement for the highly-regarded EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM 1.4x. There will not be a built-in teleconverter in the RF version, which will help reduce weight, size and complexity, sadly its omission won’t reduce the price.

Do not waste time on rumors, use your time to go out and take pictures.

Canon Might Announce A New f/2 Zoom Lens For The RF Mount (in 2024)

Canon might have a new f/2 lens on their release radar. That’s what a new rumor suggests.

Says the source of the rumor:

We have been told that Canon is planning a second RF mount f/2 zoom to “compliment” the remarkable RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, which is one of the best zoom lenses ever made.

The source didn’t know the focal length of the rumored lens, but did say to expect it some time in the first half of 2024.

Not much to rant about. Rumors that suggests release dates so far away in most cases are educated speculation, or wishful thinking. Nice for the rumor and fun community but to be taken with truckloads of salt.

Forget silly rumors, go out and take pictures.

Canon Patent: RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens

Canon Patent

A new Canon patent application was spotted.

Canon patent application 2023099388 (Japan, published 7/13/2023) discusses optical formulas for what appears to be an RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM lens for the EOS R camera system. From the patent literature:

Title of Invention

A zoom lens, an imaging device having the same, and an imaging system.

An object of the present invention is to provide a lightweight zoom lens that has high optical performance over the entire zoom range, and an imaging device and an imaging system having the zoom lens.

Description of the Related Art

In recent years, zoom lenses used in imaging apparatuses are required to have high optical performance over the entire zoom range and to be lightweight. In order to meet these requirements, the zoom lens has a first lens group with positive refractive power, a second lens group with negative refractive power, and a subsequent group including a plurality of lens groups, arranged in order from the object side to the image side. Lenses have been proposed (see Patent Documents 1 and 2).

A large-aperture telephoto zoom lens having a long focal length and a small F-number tends to have a large lens diameter, which tends to cause an increase in weight. In order to reduce the weight of the zoom lens, it is effective to increase the positive refractive power of the first lens group and reduce the lens diameters of the lens groups included in the subsequent group. However, if the refractive power of the first lens group is made too strong, it becomes difficult to correct spherical aberration, axial chromatic aberration, and lateral chromatic aberration, especially at the telephoto end.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to provide a lightweight zoom lens that has high optical performance over the entire zoom range, and an imaging apparatus and imaging system having the zoom lens. Focusing is performed by moving the fifth lens unit L5 and the sixth lens unit L6 along different trajectories . Specifically, the fifth lens unit L5 and the sixth lens unit L6 move toward the image side when focusing from an infinite object to a close object.

Example 1

  • Focal length: 103.00-292.00
  • F-value: 2.90
  • Half angle of view: 11.86-4.24
  • Image height: 21.64
  • Total length: 333.61
  • Back focus: 31.93

Canon EOS R5 Mark II To Get 60MP?

A new rumor about the Canon EOS R5 Mark II from what appears to be a new, recently surfaced rumor outlet. We never heard from these guys and do not know who they are. That’s to say that you should apply the proverbial truckload of salt. Most rumors are nothing but speculations or educated guesses.

Latest has it that the Canon EOS R5 Mark II might feature a 60MP imaging sensor. The current model, the EOS R5, already sports a 45MP sensor. The bump to 60MP wouldn’t be that unrealistic. Quoting the source:

Through some industry people, we have found out that it is very likely that the EOS R5 Mark II will get a resolution bump to 60mp, which seems to be a resolution embraced by other brands already. Reports suggest that the camera is already in the hands of the usual early testers as Canon works to refine the camera.

The same sources said that the R52 will also have the capability of shooting 8K/60P. We do not know if the increased framerate for 8K/60P will be internal RAW. External recording capabilities are not yet known.

But, hey!, what about the all-destroying overheating? Not surprisingly, “Canon has developed better cooling for the successor [the EOS R5]”. Of course they did.

The announcement date is now rumored to be around the first half of 2024. All Canon EOS R5 Mark II rumors are listed here.

Forget rumors, enjoy life and snap pictures.
