After a short discussion of the mirrorless vs DSLR debate, Tony & Chelsea Northrup think they found out the design of the Canon EOS R mirrorless camera with hybrid EF and RF mount. They even mention us :-) Enjoy.

This professional Canon EOS R body with hybrid EF/RF mount is said to play in the same league as the EOS-1D X series, i.e. the most professional tier in Canon’s gear lineup. This makes more sense than you might think at first glance. Given how committed Canon is to the EOS R system, an EOS R body with hybrid lens mount isn’t that unlikely in our opinion. And even if it is an engineering challenge, and for sure it is, Canon has the means and skills to build it.

A new Canon EOS-1D X Mark III rumor confirms the previously suggested release date. Canon already announced the development of the EOS 1D Mark III but did not reveal all specifications or the release date.

According to Nokishita the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III and the WFT-E9 wireless file transmitter are now listed on Canon’s latest product list.

The release of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is expected around the beginning of February 2020, and there are no doubts left about that.  An authoritative source confirmed it will be at the beginning of 2020, February is the natural choice (CP+ happens). General availability should be ready in April 2020.

Below is the list of what we know for sure so far about the EOS 1D X Mark III:

  • All-new CMOS sensor
  • Dual-pixel 525-point CMOS AF with 90/100% coverage horizontally and vertically
  • New Digic Processor
  • 10-bit HEIF file capture (in addition to JPEG and Raw)
  • Max 16fps capture via viewfinder, and 20fps in live view (with AF)
  • Dual CF Express card slots
  • 10-bit, 4:2:2 4K/60 video with C-Log
  • Backlit buttons

There is still uncertainty about the sensor resolution. While both 20MP and 24MP are rumored, we think the latter is more likely. Another persistent rumor says IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) will be featured in the EOS 1D X Mark III. We have no doubts that Canon is working on IBIS, given the remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with it and the fact that another Canon exec told the world about. But it’s likely that the first Canon camera to feature it will be a mirrorless, and not the flagship DSLR.

Here is a new Canon EOS 1D X Mark III rumor. Another mention of a possible announcement in February 2020 emerged from the Internet. Canon already announced the development of the EOS 1D Mark III but did not reveal all specifications or the release date..

There are no real doubts left about the announcement of the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III. An authoritative source confirmed it will be at the beginning of 2020, February is the natural choice (CP+ happens).

An image (on top) said to show the upcoming Canon EOS 1D X Mark III was posted by Canon Rumors. It’s a low resolution image. The question is: is this the EOS 1D X Mark III? It doesn’t look like.

The image on top may refer to:

  • a prototype of the EOS 1D X Mark III (for instance unpainted or unfinished on the outside)
  • a 1D X Mark III with a different look (will Canon really offer a “vintage” 1D X Mark III?)
  • A faked image and hence not a 1D X Mark III

We still haven’t made up our minds, though most think it’s a prototype of the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III. What do you think?

A new Canon EOS 1D X Mark III rumor emerged from the Internet.

Canon already announced the development of the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III but did not reveal all the features (as sensor resolution, for instance). No surprise we continue to get bits of Canon EOS 1D X Mark III rumor.

The Canon EOS 1D X Mark III (all rumors) is said to record 4K video without crop and with Dual Pixel AF, which is to expect from Canon’s next flagship DSLR. The other bit suggests Canon might feature 5.9K video on the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III, and that this decision is still not definitive. In other words: Canon execs are still discussing if they should feature 6K video from the beginning or maybe deliver it later via firmware (and maybe for a price). In any case, while 4K video is a sure thing I’d not bet on 5.9K. I mean, the EOS M6 Mark II has uncropped 4K video so why should the EOS 1D X Mark III not have it?

Professional Canon EOS R With Hybrid EF/RF Mount Might Have A Moving Sensor

We got an update to the rumor suggesting Canon is working on a professional Canon EOS R body with a lens mount that can fit both EF and RF lenses.

This professional Canon EOS R body is said to play in the same league as the EOS-1D X series, i.e. the most professional tier in Canon’s gear lineup. This makes more sense than you might think at first glance. Given how committed Canon is to the EOS R system, an EOS R body with hybrid lens mount isn’t that unlikely in our opinion. And even if it is an engineering challenge, and for sure it is, Canon has the means and skills to build it.

We have been told (thanks) that the professional EOS R body with hybrid EF/RF mount will have a moving sensor, i.e. a sensor mounted on a mechanical system that can move the sensor forth and back to suit the different flange distance of EF and RF lenses (the distance between the lens mounted on the camera body and the camera’s image sensor).

We guess a moving sensor is the most feasible engineering approach to build a camera with hybrid EF/RF lens mount. Other technical solutions appear to be more difficult to realize. Given that you need to change the distance between the lens and the image sensor, what else could you do? Maybe moving the lens mount back and forth from the camera body? Doesn’t seem to us to be the better approach. Other feasible engineering approaches? Can’t think of any. I’m looking forward to spot a Canon patent application for a moving sensor.

Canon EOS R Mark II Rumor: Field Testing Already Started

Here is a Canon EOS R Mark II rumor. The EOS R Mark II would be the followup of Canon’s first full frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R.

It’s suggested that the Canon EOS R Mark II is already undergoing field testing by a selected group of Canon photographers.

The Canon EOS R Mark II might be announced ahead of Photokina 2020 (May 2010). It’s rumored the EOS R Mark II will have similar ergonomics as the also upcoming Canon EOS Rs (the high resolution EOS R, rumored to get announced February 2020 and to feature IBIS).

So far no specifications have leaked but be assured that the next Canon EOS R Mark II rumor will follow soon. Please note that there is also a pro-oriented EOS R model that’s rumored.

So far, only this preliminary specification list for the high resolution EOS R body surfaced over the web:

  • 75mp full-frame CMOS
  • Sensor “focused on the dynamic range”
  • Frames per second “… Sounded similar to the EOS R”
  • DIGIC 9
  • Dual Card Slots
  • Joystick the same as the EOS-1D X Mark III
  • Larger and higher resolution EVF than the EOS R
  • Fully articulating LCD screen
  • Fully weather-sealed
  • Similar ergonomics as the EOS R (No touch bar)
