Adorama | B&H | DigitalRev

slrgear reviewed a pre-production model of the awesome Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens, the first to give you a constant f/1.8 across the zoom range, and at an affordable price ($799). An “an incredible lens at an amazing price” that’s “shockingly sharp”. I am sure this will be the most interesting lens this year (and easily also next year). Can’t wait to have it. Simply speaking: Sigma made everything right with this lens!

Some excerpts from the review:

This is an amazingly sharp lens, even wide open at ƒ/1.8, which is typically not the case with very wide-aperture lenses.

The Sigma does quite well in controlling chromatic aberration

[...] well-controlled vignetting

[...] distortion is nicely controlled, although not eliminated altogether

The Sigma 18-35mm lens autofocuses very quickly, racking from closest focus to infinity in about 1 second

[...] build quality of this lens seems excellent

Sample pics shot with the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 can be seen on Imaging Resource’s Flickr page. Conclusion:

The Sigma 18-35mm ƒ/1.8 DC HSM “A” lens packs a big punch in features and image quality without a big punch to the wallet. Shockingly sharp images at all apertures, even at ƒ/1.8, with excellent flatness of field and good control over chromatic aberration, distortion and vignetting make this lens a no-brainer for users of APS-C cameras looking to upgrade from their kit lens.

Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM specs:

Aperture Range: f/1.8-16

Fast Constant Maximum Aperture

Designed for APS-C-Sized Sensors

35mm Equivalent Focal Length: 28.8-56mm

Hyper Sonic AF Motor

Internal Focusing and Zoom Design

One Aspherical Element and SLD Glass

Super Multi-Layer Coating

Canon EF Lens Mount

Compatible with Sigma USB Dock

Great news!! The Magic Lantern team announced that Magic Lantern will run on Canon’s new Rebel T5i (EOS 700D) (price & specs). It is not a stable release so far, hence be careful if you are not experienced with such firmware hacks. On Facebook they write (emphasis mine):

We can confirm now, that ML will run on the 700D/100D (aka T5i/SL1).
RAW conversion with the EyeFrame Converter for use of the footage in Resolve/After Effects without complicated workflows (http://eyeframeconverter.wordpress.com/download/), or import it DIRECTLY into Premiere Pro and After Effects with a plugin (http://19lights.com/wp/2013/06/08/magic-lantern-raw-video/)!
Auto ETTR, a feature that is useful to anyone who shoots RAW, because it will expose the feature just so that no highlights get clipped, and thereby a maximum of dynamic range is achieved, is being worked on continuously.

Please stay tuned for a stable release; we want everything to be working perfectly. In the mean-time, feel free to make your own Magic Lantern – HOW? you may ask. Well, here’s a video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcHJdsl5Dxw.
Alternatively you can use pre-built versions from http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6362.0. If you need help with any of that, the forum community will probably have explained common issues already, and if you’re sure, the issue has not been raised, yet – feel free to ask!

Please bear in mind, that everything you do is on your own risk, and we’re still aiming to release a full working version for all of you, once it works for all of you, that is.

Also, we’re very happy that the community and all of you are so supportive, help with the development of ML and plugins for your programs, so…
