Canon’s High Resolution EOS R Camera Undergoing Field Testing?

High Resolution Eos R

Did you forget about the high resolution EOS R model we reported first about and that was confirmed by a Canon exec? Well, it’s here again.

A new rumor about the high resolution EOS R showed up, and it seems it sums up everything that was rumored in the past. The source claims that a small group of selected photographers is already testing this camera. The rumored resolution is 90MP, which fits pretty well with the resolution we were tipped last year. There is also a Canon patent that seems to confirm what our sources told us.

All in all there is nothing new coming with this rumor. Sometimes the interweb just recycles what is already there, and easily gets forgotten. That’s how the rumor industry works. Take it or leave it. The only new information coming with this rumor concerns the EVF (Electric ViewFinder), said to be larger than on actual models.

That’s all. So far no specifications nor an announcement date have been suggested.

Stay tuned.

Ibis Canon Rumors Canon Full Frame Mirrorless Canon PowerShot G7 X Canon Eos 90d Coronavirus

With a rather unprecedented move in the industry, Canon Australia decided to close their online shop to support local retailers. The aim is to help small business to go on during the global pandemic and the consequent economic turmoils. Kudos Canon!

Canon press release:

To our valued Canon consumers,

This notice is to inform you that Canon Australia will be ceasing the operation of its direct to consumer marketplace – Canon Store – for the foreseeable future, effective from 30 September 2020.

The Canon Store was launched in 2011 as an ecommerce platform designed to expand online shopping options for local consumers. Fast forward to 2020, the unprecedented challenges currently facing the Australian market has seen Canon Australia re-examine the best way to help consumers access our products, services and support. As a result, we are proudly streamlining our efforts in supporting local retailers to drive competition in the local market and bring you the best value product offers, promotions, services and experiences possible.

Key dates to note:
Last orders: The Canon Store will stop taking product orders on 30 September 2020.
Gift cards and vouchers: Active Canon Store gift cards and vouchers can be applied to purchases and used in conjunction with eligible offers on the Canon Store until 30 September 2020. Please contact Canon Australia via [email protected] to discuss how you can redeem any non-expired gift cards or vouchers beyond this date.
Promotional codes: Canon Store promotional code and discount offers are valid until 30 September 2020. Please contact Canon Australia via [email protected] if you have questions about a current promo-code that may be affected. Canon Store codes will not be transferable to other retailers or offers.
Products on backorder: Canon Store will no longer accept payment for products on backorder and will no longer add consumers to waitlists for out of stock product. Product purchases on backorder will continue to be filled for stock scheduled to arrive before 30 September 2020. Canon will directly contact consumers with orders scheduled to arrive after this date to arrange a refund or support via a local retailer.

Purchases made on the Canon Store prior to 30 September 2020 will still receive free shipping and will be covered by the Canon 14 Day Peace of Mind return policy. Canon Australia’s unique 5-year local warranty for Mirrorless, DSLR, Digital Video Camera & Lens products is unaffected by the Canon Store closure and will continue to be supported for purchases made at authorised Canon sellers.

If you have any questions, please contact us via [email protected]. Or visit our Frequently Asked Questions page here.

Moving forward, Canon will continue to work with local retailers to bring hands-on product experiences and promotions to consumers. To stay up to date with the latest product offers, experiences and news, we encourage you to follow Canon Australia on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support over the years. We look forward to bringing you the best of our innovative products, services and imaging solutions in new ways and trust that you will benefit from our strengthened arrangement with local retailers.

Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6 vs Sony a7S III For Vlogging Comparison

Eos R5 Vs Eos R6

The year 2020 didn’t just have Covid-19, it also saw the announcement of the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6. Two important milestones in Canon’s history. Another camera that was announced just a few weeks ago is the Sony a7S III.

So, how do the EOS R5 vs EOS R6 vs Sony a7S III cameras compare for a vlogging experience? Tony & Chelsea Northrup try to answer.

The EOS R5 seems to be highly regarded as a stills camera. In particular, the EOS R5 autofocus system seems to be huge leap forwards. More Canon EOS R5 review stuff is listed here, for the EOS R6 see here. User manual are available for download for the EOS R5 and the EOS R6. My opinion(s) about the EOS R5 overheating hysteria is listed here.

Canon Working To Make IBIS Units Smaller, Patent Suggests

Ibis Units

It took Canon a long time to feature IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) on their cameras. Now they are actively researching how to make it better. The Canon EOS R5 already has the best in its class.

Canon patent application 2020-140104 (Japan, spotted by Canon News) discusses technical aspects related to making an IBIS unit smaller. IBIS units are relatively bulky and take a considerable amount of space inside the camera. A smaller IBIS unit might mean an overall smaller camera.

More Canon patent applications are listed here. Some particularly interesting patent applications we think might get into production are these:

Friday Hacker Blogging: How To Watch Star Wars In Linux Terminal (and update on Canon hacker attack)

Star Wars In Lunux

For the Friday Hacker blogging series here is something that’s as fun as it is useless, but it will appeal to all those hardcore Star Wars fans.

You can watch Star Wars in Linux terminal (not just Linux, every *nix flavor will likely work). We are not talking about a digitally remastered version here, no high res graphics or else. In fact there are no graphics in a modern meaning. All you have to do is to enter the following command in your terminal:

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

You can stop the “movie” with ctrl-j, and then type quite to exit.

Should you not have telnet on your system you can easily install it. For instance on Ubuntu or Debian:

sudo apt install telnet

Here are two screenshots.

Canon Ransomware Attack

Here is also an update on the ransomware attack against Canon. See here for an update or if you don’t know what a ransomware attack is. The Maze ransomware gang updated their leak site and now it states that “0.2%” of Canon data was published. Previously it was 5%. We do not know yet what exactly that means. Also, we obtained a copy of the leaked Canon data and can confirm it does not contain sensible sensitive or otherwise critical information.
