Canon EOS 5Dx coming with 4K recording? [CW4/CW3]

Eos 5d Mark Iv

Another suggestion of 4K coming to the EOS 5D Mark III replacement. As a reminder: we were the first to leak it (in July 2014), and we got another pertinent suggestion a month ago.

The interesting thing with this rumor: it comes from an unexpected site. It’s online retailer DigitalRev on their blog to post the latest suggestion about the EOS 5D Mark III replacement. They also suggest the moniker EOS 5Dx, something we leaked last year. To sum up what they posted:

  • 4K will be on board
  • A new Auto-Focus system based on 1D X Mark II is suggested

And then:

The new 5D will also include Canon Log and Wide DR gamut, allowing the camera to capture a much wider dynamic range and opening up more possibilities in post. The camera will reportedly include both a CFast card slot and an SD card slot, presumably to accommodate 4K video.

The 5DX is already in testing with a select number of photographers, and should be ready for production once any software bugs have been ironed out.

Things are getting interesting, and all of our EOS 5D Mark IV rumors are hitting the web again. As I wrote many times, 4K on the EOS 5D Mark III replacement is no longer a matter of speculation but a matter of common sense. Would it be possible for Canon to announce such a camera without 4K on board? Don’t think so.

I rate the rumor about 4K on the EOS 5D Mark IV with CW4, the suggestion about the moniker EOS 5Dx as CW3.

Canon congratulates winner of World Press Photo of the Year

LONDON, 18 February 2016 – Canon Europe, leader in imaging solutions, today sends its congratulations to Warren Richardson winner of the World Press Photo of the Year 2015. The winning photograph depicts a man and child attempting to cross the border from Serbia to Hungary at night. The pair were part of a group of people seeking to enter the country before a secure border fence was constructed. Due to the circumstance, Richardson was not able to use flash to capture the image, so the photograph is lit by moonlight alone.

The World Press Photo Contest, now in its 59th year, is internationally seen as the world’s most prestigious competition for photojournalists. The judges of the contest, which has been sponsored by Canon since 1992, selected one image of 82,951 photos submitted by 5,775 professional photographers from 128 countries as the winning Press Photo of the Year 2015. There were seven themed categories, and two long-term project categories, open for contestants to enter this year.

“We are proud to support the world’s best photojournalists in their quest to tell the stories that need to be told through this prestigious and highly anticipated event,” comments Kieran Magee, Director, Professional Imaging, Canon Europe. “Images such as Warren’s play a hugely powerful role in capturing the real impact and human side of a story and importantly, making sure they reach a broader audience. It is for this reason we’re honoured to have been supporting these awards for the past 24 years.”

Warren Richardson captured his winning image on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a EF 24mm f/1.4L USM lens. The winning photograph also won first place in the Spot News category. Other category winning entries taken on Canon cameras include:

  • Storm Front on Bondi Beach, taken by Rohan Kelly on a Canon EOS-1D Mark II for the Nature singles category
  • Tough Times for Oragutans, taken by Tim Laman on a Canon EOS-1D C for the Nature stories category

As winner of the World Press Photo of the Year 2015, Warren Richardson will receive a cash prize of €10,000 from World Press Photo at an awards ceremony in Amsterdam on 25 April. In addition, Canon Europe will award him with the EOS-1D X Mark II, its recently announced flagship camera.

The prize-winning pictures are presented in an exhibition visiting more than 100 cities in over 45 countries over the course of the year and seen by more than 3.5 million people worldwide. Yet another mention of 4K on the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

Eos 5d Mark Iv

We were the first to leak it (in July 2014), and we got another pertinent suggestion a month ago. While we have never been quoted by any of the big rumor sites, it appears some of those sites are now also starting to suggest the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (or whatever it will be named) might feature 4K video recording.

As I wrote in the past, 4K on the EOS 5D Mark III replacement has become matter of common sense. It is hard to imagine Canon can afford to announce the fourth iteration of their high popular EOS 5D line-up without featuring 4K.

The announcement of the EOS 5D Mark IV is still a matter of speculation. Somewhere in Summer or late Summer/Fall is likely. Stay tuned…

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge use Dual Pixel Auto-Focus technology (is this Canon’s tech?)

Samsung Galaxy S7

Samsung announced their new Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The interesting point: Samsung touts both smartphones to have DUal Pixel Auto-Focus (DPAF) on board. DPAF is a technology developed by Canon and introduced first on the Canon EOS 70D in 2013.

Now, while Samsung doesn’t mention Canon anywhere, there are some statements that indirectly point to Canon. Like the following sentence taken from Samsung’s Galaxy S7 product page (emphasis mine):

Dual Pixel technology, which is utilized in selective, high-end DSLR camera models, as well as those of the Galaxy S7, sends light from the lens to two image sensors separately to adjust the focus, much in the same way that the human eye does.

Did Canon license their DPAF technology to Samsung? Or did Canon build the imaging sensor found in the Galaxy S7? I couldn’t find any pertinent information on the web. However, I guess it is an almost safe bet to say that Canon is in some way involved in the imaging sensor of the Galaxy S7.

Look how Samsung presents Dual Pixel AF:

That’s pretty similar to how Canon presents DPAF.

Below are Samsung’s Galaxy S7 introduction video as well as a video about Samsung’s implementation of DPAF.
