[Review] EOS 6D First Thoughts Review (and comparison with Nikon D600)

Let’s start with a Digitalcamerinfo’s first impressions review of the EOS 6D.
The Canon EOS 6D is designed to be a lighter, cheaper alternative to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. To that end, it accomplishes its goals, squeezing a 20.2-megapixel full-frame sensor and updated autofocus into a relatively small body. [...]
The EOS 6D does, however, seem much simpler to use at first blush than either the EOS 5D Mark III or its predecessor, the venerable EOS 5D Mark II. The 6D’s inclusion of Canon’s now-ubiquitous “Q” quick control menu and a physical mode dial chock full of automatic shooting modes should make novice shooters feel right at home. The “Q” menu, in particular, makes adjusting settings much easier, taking full advantage of the large 3-inch, 1.040 million-pixel display.
Next, lets have a look at a comparison by Digitalcamerainfo between the EOS 6D and Nikon’s D600. Both cams have a price tag of $2100, have similar specs and aim at the same target (customers). Are they so much different (beside the fact that the EOS 6D has built-in GPS and WiFi)?
On the Nikon side, the D600’s top plate is pulled almost directly from their top APS-C model, the D7000; the back control scheme, on the other hand, is largely based on their recently released full-frame body, the Nikon D800. On the Canon EOS 6D you can see bits and pieces that are clearly culled from the high-end APS-C EOS 7D, while the body’s silhouette is reminiscent of a smaller Canon EOS 5D Mark III.
Won’t anticipate more, since it is a well made article you should read. So if you want to learn about the little details that differentiate one camera from the other you where to go.

8 months ago |i heard some strange things about the 6D autofocus.
some photokina visitors here in germany said that while the D600 AF looks better on paper they found that the 6D autofocus was much better.
it´s hard to say without having the pictures to see if the focus was spot on.. but i guess it is spot on.
so while nothing can be said about sport photography the 6D AF should be very good for everything else. even with only one cross sensor.
im really curious about the first tests…..

8 months ago |I’m not sure why I would buy a 6D over my 5D2, I mean the 6D has one cross type sensor? In a camera made this year that is crap. I bought a 7D as a back up and I will wait for something better to come along. Why does Canon put bits and pieces into each camera, drives me nuts. (I know to sell cameras), but they are annoying their customers. Specially with Sony and Fuji MSC on their way up. If either one of them made a Mirrorless FF camera with inter-changable lenses it would be a whole new ball game.

I’m also very disappointed by Canon with 6D. With such competition, that’s craziness. I do agree that this is a camera for new customers, and not upgraders.

8 months ago |I’m looking at it is a landscape camera. I have a 7D but want FF for landscapes. I could stretch to a 5D3, but the 6D is smaller, lighter, and cheaper. The AF specs don’t matter to me much for my use, although I’ve also read photokina reports that it was quick. It should be great for low light with the extra sensitive AF point. Downsides for me are the exterior controls and possibly build quality, but you can’t have everything for 2k. All the howling over the 6D seems misplaced to me, although I too was initially put off the AF specs. It’s not as well rounded as the 5D3, but if you need all that functionality, pony up.

8 months ago |Yeh! D600 and 6D looks very similar. But D600 has some advantages: faster FPS, two card slots and pop-up flash (yes, this is very good as it can control wireless flashes without an expensive additional equipment like 580EX II, this is very useful for a amateurs with not so fat wallet). GPS and WiFi looks not so important for a camera.
