Rating I recently pusaecrhd the Rebel XS as a Christmas present for my wife and myself, and we both love it. We mostly use the auto modes. We are not advanced photographers. We mostly just take pictures of our baby daughter. But it has done great for that. We love that when you press the shutter button, it take the photo immediately, unlike with point'n'shoots. And when I want to have more manual control, it is easy. For a beginner, it is everything we need and more. Can't comment on more advanced use because we don't know enough to use more advanced features

I'm with 'd30gaijin'. It has to be a GX1 size sensor, smaller than a 4/3rd Oly sensor because of IP owned by Oly and Pan etc.
Having diverted from Nikon and Oly DSLRs for the Canon g12-GX1 fashion statement, a fun slow-food diversion from omnipresent DSLRs, I'd be thinking more Oly Pen or Fuji XPro if I wanted to go this route.
That said, this thing is even less a 'rangefinder' style than the G series Canons. Maybe it's best to save for a Leica M9 (smile).
But what’s that other rumour about the Japanese recession and financial crisis fast approaching the status of Greece, according to the weekend's IMF reports?
Car manufacturing is being affected there. So there could be an impact on Canon and the future development of necessary lenses.
At least with Oly the hard work's been done and the lens line-up is available, tried and proven.

Canon has been very slow in innovation the last few years..... Its gonna take them a long time to catch up to Sony/Oly/Panasonic in this market. Im glad I went the Panasonic/Olympus M4/3 route with their full system of cameras and lens choices.

The PowerShot G1X's FoVCR is actually 1.85x and not 1.89x.

As Canon already uses the 1.6x crop ratio standard for its APS-C dSLRs, the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens will give a FoV of 22mm x 1.6 = 35.2mm (approx 35mm). Since 35mm is a popular focal length for many 35mm format, film rangefinder cameras therefore 22mm would be the ideal native focal length for this pancake lens.

Canon, like Sony and Nikon, has never been a member of the Four Thirds consortium, therefore the EOS-M cannot accept 2x FoVCR lenses that Olympus and Panasonic use.

The white dot marking also distinguishes the EF-M type lenses from the standard EF and EF-S dSLR lenses, which are marked by a red dot and a white square respectively.

If sony would get their act together I will buy the Nex-5F, specially after seeing this camera. The only reason I would buy this camera is, if the EF lenses will focus with an adaptor. Otherwise, why would I buy it?
