ePhotozine posted their full Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS review. And like the other reviews we featured, this one too is rather fond of the lens. They gave the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS a 4.5/5 rating and a “Highly Recommended”. From their conclusion:

Canon RF users are being treated here with a super lens, with real pulling power to bring in those more distant subjects, plus the bonus of having an impressive close-up ability. And all at a highly competitive price. If only there was weather resistance then it really would be hard to beat.

Lenses that go beyond 300mm have always had a serious price penalty, but it does look as though this is now breaking down and bringing that 400mm reach more within a reasonable budget.

For the Canon RF user, this lens looks to be a bit of a no-brainer, with most of the right features, the right quality and the right price. ‘Highly Recommended’.

Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS Review (solid lens for the money, D. Abbott)

RF 100-400mm F/5.6-8 IS Review

Here is another Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS review, by one of our favorite gear reviewer. Although it is not an “L” tier lens, the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS gets a lot of very positive reviews.

  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Nano USM AF Motor

  • Optical Image Stabilizer

Dustin Abbott posted his exhaustive Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS review. From Dustin’s conclusion:

[…] a truly portable lens that brings this incredible focal range into the kind of size and weight combination that many more photographers can cope with.

[…] For the money, this is a solid lens. It definitely has its limitations, but it pulls off this challenging focal range in a pretty convincing faction…and that small size might mean that even those with deeper pockets might pick one up just for the sake of its portability. This is a solid move for Canon, and the RF 100-400 IS is a lens I suspect will sell very well for them.

[…] it will also work fine for those that shoot action, birds, or wildlife in reasonably good light. The autofocus is quick and quiet, and I had no problem locking onto subjects. Just be realistic about the kinds of lighting situations that you’ll be able to get enough shutter speed to stop action, and you’ll be fine. I can see this lens being a “bridge” lens for many – the telephoto option they can afford now while they save (or hope) for a more premium option in the future. For the money, this is a solid lens.

As usual Dustin Abbott’s reviews come with sample images, comparison charts, and all the information you might want to know. Dustin’s reviews are what I look for when I am about to purchase new gear. As usual Dustin Abbott also releases a complete video review. See below.

Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS Review (a surprising lens and pretty darn good)

Admiring Light posted their Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS review. Says the reviewer in the conclusion:

[…] the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM [is a] a surprising lens. When it was first introduced, it was easy to dismiss as a slow, cheap consumer zoom that probably wasn’t very good. Well, it does have a slow maximum aperture, and it is fairly inexpensive, but it is pretty darn good. While it isn’t going to challenge the RF 100-500mm f/5-7.1L in ultimate image quality, the lens manages to produce images with very good sharpness, nice bokeh and overall high image quality. The lens also has an excellent image stabilizer, fast and accurate autofocus and is small and light enough to be a lens that makes it into your bag every day.

This last part is key. Before this lens, I usually dreaded carrying lenses longer than 200mm. With the 100-400mm, it’s a pleasure to have in my bag. It can fit in the vast majority of camera bags with no issues, and weighs less than the RF 24-105mm f/4L. This compact size, along with the excellent AF and good optics makes this a perfect lens to carry for daily shooting. It’s a great bargain and a lens most Canon R shooters should consider for their kit. Highly recommended.

Photography Blog posted their exhaustive Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS review. There is also a set of sample pictures. From their conclusion:

The new RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM is the best super-telephoto lens for most Canon full-frame mirrorless shooters, delivering satisfyingly sharp results and being compact and lightweight enough to carry around all day, and it’s also something of a bargain to boot.

The main rival to this lens is the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM, which at an eye-watering £2899.99 / $2699.99 will be well out of the price range of most people.

For everyone except professional users who will use the 100-500mm day in, day out, at just £699 / $649 the new RF 100-400mm makes a lot more sense from a financial point of view.

Thankfully its not just the price tag that’s appealing – it also delivers the goods in most other departments, from image quality to focusing speed, from build quality to feature-set.
