A better 18-135mm IS STM lens coming for the EOS M system? [CW2]

Eos M5

We know Canon will release new lenses for the EOS M system in 2017. Rumor had it, there will be at least one prime lens to come (though two are rumored, a 35mm and a 50mm).

I got word (thanks) that Canon may announce an 18-135mm IS STM lens of “higher quality” than the available EF-M lenses. I interpret “higher quality” as referring to a lens with better optics and a constant and possibly fast aperture. Unfortunately, I have not received any specification for such a lens, and I didn’t spot any patent for an EF-M 18-135mm IS STM lens so far.

There is only one thing you can be sure about: there will be new lenses for the EOS M system in 2017, we just have no idea what lenses to expect.

Stay tuned…

  • EF-S Mount Lens/APS-C Format
  • 28.8-216mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • One UD Element & One Aspherical Element
  • NANO USM Autofocus System
  • Image Stabilizer and Dynamic IS
  • Compatible with PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter

Along with their Canon EOS 80D review, Photography Blog also posted the review about Canon’s new kit lens for APS-C DSLR, the EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM featuring NANO USM technology.

From the conclusion:

Image quality is pretty good rather than outstanding. Centre and edge sharpness isn’t great throughout the zoom range at the maximum aperture, but stopping-down by one stop sharpens things up considerably, whatever focal length you use. Chromatic aberrations aren’t very well controlled, though, and there’s obvious geometric distortion at the wider focal lengths and some obvious corner shading at the maximum aperture. The lens also doesn’t ship with a hood, which is only available as an optional and rather expensive accessory.

The EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM gets 4 starts out of 5, and is rated as a “relatively small, lightweight and versatile zoom lens for APS-C DSLR owners that delivers pleasing results for both stills and video“.

Photographer and reviewer Dustin Abbott just published his findings about the new Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Nano USM lens, introduced a few months ago with the Canon EOS 80D.

You can watch the 15 minutes video below, which will tell you anything that’s in Abbott’s review, or you may head over to his site and read it, along with many sample pictures. In the conclusion Abbott writes:

There is a lot to like about Canon’s newest lens. I’m blown away by the new focus system and feel like it represents a better, more effective focus system than any of Canon’s consumer grade lenses have received before. It is almost eerily fast and silent, and has proven quiet effective in both tracking and stills focus performance.  This is going to help a lot of people keep up with their active children or grandchildren. I feel that Nano USM represents a quantum leap forward for an AF system that is equally effective in both stills and video shooting. I only wish that the image quality had taken a similar leap forward. It feels like it could be better, though it is good enough to meet the needs of many shooters and is competitive with similar lenses. This is a great travel lens, though I might wish that the great looking new lens body included some attempt at weather resistance. Read the review…
