Samyang announce 35mm F1.2 ED AS UMC CS lens for mirrorless systems

Samyang (Rokinon, Bowers etc) announced a new, super fast lens, the Samyang 35mm F1.2 ED AS UMC CS. The Samyang 35mm F1.2 is a lens for mirrorless camera systems, hence it will come with a mount for Canon’s EOS M system (and for Fuji X , Sony E and MFT mounts).

There are two models of this lens:

Sigma Advisory: Some Sigma lenses for Canon not fully compatible with EOS-1D X Mark II

Sigma released a press release about compatibility issue of their 20mm F1.4 DG HSM “Art”, 35mm F1.4 DG HSM “Art” and 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM lenses with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II.

Thank you for purchasing and using our products.

We have found that some SIGMA interchangeable lenses for CANON are not fully compatible with CANON EOS-1DX Mark II, which was released on April 28th. When certain lenses are attached to this camera, exposure of the image may not be accurate. We are sorry for the inconvenience, and we will make a further announcement on our website when specific details are finalised. In addition, please also refer to the below usage notice related to this announcement.

When the lenses listed below are used and either “Evaluative Metering” or “Center-weighted Average Metering” is  selected in Metering Mode of the camera, the image could show some underexposure.

We are currently working on the firmware update for respective lenses, and the release dates will be announced later.

Usage Notice for customers who are using EOS mount SIGMA lenses on a CANON EOS-1DX Mark II
・ MO (Manual Override) function is unavailable with this camera (Full-time Manual function can be offered).
・ When using a SIGMA interchangeable lens for EOS, setting the corrections to [Disable] is recommended, as “Lens Correction” functions of the camera, such as Peripheral illumination correction, Chromatic aberration correction, Diffraction correction and Distortion correction, are not supported. If those functions are activated, the performance of lenses may not be accurate. This is not only for EOS-1DX Mark II, but also other camera bodies.

Canon EF-M 35mm f/1.8 STM lens coming Summer 2016? [CW3]

I’ve been told (thanks) that Canon will announce a EF-M 35mm f/1.8 STM lens during Summer or late Summer 2016, in any case before Photokina 2016.

Unfortunately, I got no specs about the EF-M 35mm f/1.8 STM lens. It’s not the first time such a lens is rumored. I think there will be new lenses for the EOS M system in 2016 (something Canon itself stated), and a 35mm f/1.8 appears to be a pretty likely choice.

On an APS-C sensor a 35mm lens is equivalent to a 56mm lens on full-frame (Canon’s APS-C sensors have a crop factor of 1.6). 50-55mm is a very classic focal lenght that should be available for every camera system. For the time being there is only one prime lens for the EOS M system, the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM (equiv. 35mm). If Canon has to make one and only one additional prime lens for the EOS M system, then it will be a 35mm lens.

In the meantime we are waiting for the EF-M 28mm Macro lens that leaked last week. Stay tuned…

Canon’s Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics technology explained (video)

Interesting short clip by Canon Imaging Plaza on YouTube about how Canon’s new Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics (BR) technology works. Pretty interesting.

The Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics (BR) lens is a compound lens that uses Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) optics. BR optics are made from an organic optical material developed by Canon, and have anomalous dispersion properties equal to or greater than fluorite. When combined with concave and convex lenses, they can correct chromatic aberration to a degree greater than previously achievable.
