YONGNUO Might Release Lenses For Canon Cameras, Rumor Has It

YONGNUO

Interesting Canon rumor coming from Asia. YONGNUO might be set to soon release a lens for the Canon RF mount.

An image shared by CameraBeta shows EXIF information suggesting a YN35mm F1.4 UWM was used on a Canon EOS R6 body (see image above). Interesting.

While this would be one of the very few third party lens for the RF mount. However, if it is an autofocus lens (it seems) then the question is how Yongnuo has solved the patent infringement issues Canon already raised with Viltrox.

Let me know what your thoughts are.

Canon Patent: 35mm And 45mm f/2.8 For Full Frame, And 35mm f/2.8 For APS-C

Canon Patent

A new Canon patent for more RF mount lenses: 35mm and 45mm f/2.8 for full frame imaging sensors, and a 35mm f/2.8 for APS-C sensors.

Canon patent application P2022163979 (Japan, published 10/27/2022) discusses optical formulas for the following lenses for the RF mount:

  • 35mm f/2.8 (for full frame)
  • 45mm f/2.8 (for full frame)
  • 35mm f/2.8 (for APS-C)

From the patent literature:

A compact and lightweight optical system having high optical performance is provided by appropriately setting the refractive index and power arrangement of each lens.

Description of the Related Art

In recent years, imaging devices have been miniaturized, and the number of pixels of imaging elements used in the imaging devices has increased.

Description of the Related Art

As image pickup devices become smaller and have more pixels, optical systems used in image pickup apparatuses are required to have high optical performance, and to be compact and lightweight.

Example 1

  • Focal Length: 33.13
  • F-value: 2.91
  • Half angle of view: 33.15
  • Image height: 21.64

I do not like this kind of rumors. Rumors born out of the fact that it is very likely that Canon will release a given lens (or gear). It’s the case with the Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L lens for the EOS R system.

There is no doubt this lens will come to EOS R system, sooner or later. So why not start a rumor? Says the source of the rumor:

[it had been] reported that it would be announced in 2021, and then in 2022, and now we are told that the lens has been pushed back to 2023. We’re not exactly sure why the lens has been pushed back, but I think that we can assume as to why, and we’re tired of typing the reasons!

I guess the reasons are the usual supply chain issues, mother of all issues. So, after having been rumors for 2021 (with a certain confidence), now the Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L is a 2023 affair. See here all Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L rumors listed since their beginning. There is also a patent referring to the lens.

Stay tuned.

Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L is rumored almost since the beginning of the EOS R system era. And it’s rumored for a good reason: their is no doubt Canon will eventually release this lens, sooner or later.

The Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L got a new mention, and it’s suggested the lens is already in the “hands of testers and marketing folks and recently appeared in an internal dealer roadmap”. There is a bit of uncertainty if it will be f/1.2 or f/1.4, though. Why not both?

All Canon rumors are listed here. Stay tuned.
