The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens for EOS R is a “Monster Performer”

Canon RF Vs EF 50mm F/1.2 EOS R System

Digital Camera World posted a short review of what for sure appears to be the best performing lens for the new Canon EOS R system, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM. They call it a “monster performer, with a price and weight to match“. This is the lens Canon built to showcase what you can do with the newly engineered RF mount. Unfortunately, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L sells at $2,299.

Their verdict:

Not only was this designed to be a lust-worthy launch day lens for the EOS R, it was envisioned as a demonstration for what the new RF mount is capable of. The price tag is tear-inducing, but mount this fantastic lens on the EOS R and even the most vocal naysayer will be a believer in what Canon is trying to achieve with the system.

Press release:

Kenko Tokina Co., Ltd. is proud to announce the sales release of Tokina opera 50mm F/1.4 FF – debut premium lens in Tokina’s new opera series for high-performance full-frame DSLR cameras.

About opera Series

With the debut of 50mm F1.4 FF Tokina is launching a new series of next generation, premium full-frame lenses for high-end DSLR cameras called “opera” series. The new series is designed to perfectly match recent high-resolution full-frame DSLR cameras that demand the highest quality optical designs. Building on the award winning heritage of Tokina’s AT-X line of lenses, the new opera series will offer an ever-expanding, premium line of Full-frame lenses that meet the growing demands of high-performance DSLR cameras.

In modern society the word “opera” is commonly used to indicate stage art works that combine drama, music and dance. In Italian it means work or work of art. As an omitted art genre definition opera comes from “opera musicale” that means a piece of music work. In Latin opera comes from “opus” that is still used in contemporary language meaning “great literary, artistic or intellectual work” (e.g. “magnum opus”, “opera magna”). We chose the name opera for our new premium full-frame DSLR lens series with the idea that it will help the photographer in creating real “works of art”.

The 50mm F1.4 FF is the debut premium lens in Tokina’s new opera series for high-performance full-frame DSLR cameras. As an omitted art genre definition opera comes from “opera musicale” that means a piece of music work. In Latin opera comes from “opus” and in contemporary language “magnum opus”, “opera magna” still has a meaning of “great literary, artistic or intellectual work”. We chose the name “opera” for a new premium full-frame DSLR lens series thinking of a lens that will help photographer in creating real “work of art”.

A new Canon 50mm lens out in the field, undergoing tests?

Ef 50mm F/1.8 STM Cyber Monday

A new “Canon 50mm” rumor surfaced over the web, saying Canon is actively field-testing a new 50mm lens. No other details are suggested at the time.

Let’s hope we’ll see an updated Canon 50mm lens soon. Besides the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, Canon hasn’t updated any 50mm lens since a lot of years.

We do not think we’ll see such a lens in 2018.

Stay tuned…
