Canon EOS 7D Mark II Video Review (superb AF, IQ close to 5D3)

TheCameraStoreTV on YouTube posted their video review of Canon’s EOS 7D Mark II.

TCSTV’s Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake take a look, with a little help from acclaimed photojournalist Todd Korol. It’s an introduction to features and performance. They talk about the outstanding auto-focus, one of the killer features of the EOS 7D Mark II (and explain and test it in depth). Another highlight of the 7D Mark II is the high ISO performance and overall image quality, coming very close to the EOS 5D Mark III. You get all you need to know in 17 minutes. The review is not without criticism.

The EOS 7D Mark II is the industry leading DSLR in the APS-C world, the best possible APS-C camera for professional sport and action photographers, not to forget photojournalists. And it comes with the relatively affordable price of $1799 for the body only. This will be a huge best seller, given that you get the AF-system of the EOS-1D X, 10fps, and amazing high ISO. Read more about the EOS 7D Mark II’s excellent weather sealing, the highly advanced AF, and the industry leading high ISO performance (have a look here too). Canon EOS 7D Mark II Shooting Experience (DPReview)

EOS 7D Mark II

Digital Photography Review added a section “Shooting Experience” to their upcoming Canon EOS 7D Mark II review. An excerpt:

Canon has clearly put an emphasis on consistency of controls across the 5D and 7D lines, suggesting that it sees this camera as one that a 5D III user might add to their kit for situations where fast action shooting or telephoto reach are of prime importance […] To Canon’s credit, this consistency of design works really well. After using the 7D II for a while I picked up a 5D III and the transition was virtually seamless.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II High ISO Test and Comparison with 7D and 5D3 (7D2 one stop below 5D3)

EOS 7D Mark IIHigh ISO comparison (no noise reduction applied) – all images © Photo Studio 9 and used with permission

Japanese site Photo Studio 9 (translated) posted an EOS 7D Mark II review with a lot of sample pictures, and with an eye on the high ISO performance of Canon’s new APS-C flagship.

While we had another, more real-world oriented review that pointed out how excellent the high ISO performance of the 7D Mark II is, even stressing that it had less noise than the full-frame EOS 5D Mark III, this review gives possibly a better view on the 7D Mark II’s high ISO performance. However, it still is very very good.

Among the many sample pics posted by Photo Studio 9, there are two images I want to outline here. First one is the pic above where you see a high ISO comparison between the EOS 7D Mark II, the EOS 7D, and the EOS 5D Mark III. The image above shows results with no noise reduction applied in camera. You can see that the 7D Mark II can not really hold up to the full-frame 5D Mark III. Never the less, I think it is performing pretty good. I would say the 7D Mark II is one stop behind the 5D Mark III when it comes to high ISO performance – and that is great for an APS-C sensor. The noise on the 5D Mark III looks better in my opinion, with less color noise at the very high ISO settings. The 7D Mark II looks sharper but the 5D3 keeps more details.

Below you see a comparison between the three mentioned DSLRs, but this time using ISO settings from ISO 200 to ISO 3200 (again no noise reduction). Here too I would say the 7D Mark II is one stop behind the 5D Mark III.

Guest Post: Canon EOS 7D Mark II Hands-On and First Impression

EOS 7D Mark II Hands-On
EOS 7D Mark II, ISO 8000

This is a guest post by South Wales (UK) based freelance photographer Simon King. He took his new EOS 7D Mark II to two rugby games and shares his impression. All images are copyrighted and used with permission.

I recently took delivery of Canon’s new 7D Mark II APS-C camera, I got to take the camera out with me to a Professional Rugby Match on Friday 31st October. As the 7D Mark II is designed as a sports and action camera this was an ideal opportunity to put it through it’s paces. This isn’t a technical pixel peeping review of the camera more first a impressions feel for how it performed.

As a freelance photographer I have to buy my own equipment, I currently shoot with two Canon 5D Mark III’s but for sport I really need something with a higher frame rate and deeper buffer. I was giving serious consideration to the 1DX but that is a significant investment so when the rumours of a 7D Mark II starting getting stronger I held off until I was certain that the camera was a reality. Canon announced the 7D Mark II on 15th September and I pre-ordered one as soon as they were listed […]. The specifications of the camera looked exactly what I needed; AF on a par or better than the 5D3; 10 frames per second with a huge buffer and the added benefit of a 1.6 crop factor. I owned the original 7D and in fairness it is a great camera but the image quality suffered a lot when the ISO was raised beyond around 1250, in my experience. So the one thing that concerned me about the 7D Mark II was if the image quality would be good enough for my purposes.

When sample images come out for a new camera they don’t tend to show the kind of images in the situations that matter to me and the same was true of the 7D Mark II. But when Scott Kelby showed some sample images he had taken at an American Football game I started to get very hopeful that the camera would more than meet my needs.
