The Canon EOS 7D Replacement In Use At FIFA 2014 – True Or Not?

FIFA 2014
Fake EOS 7D Mark II (mock-up)

It’s making the rounds that the replacement for the Canon EOS 7D (price & specs) is in use by selected photographers at FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. We reported it first, and others also got this information.

For the sake of good reporting, I have to say that while I got some more bits about the 7D replacement being in use at FIFA 2014, I also got some mails from (supposed) Canon press photographers that were saying it is not true, that no 7D replacement is undergoing final tests in Brazil, that no selected photographers are using it.

Hard to say what to believe and what not. The replacement for the EOS 7D, i.e. Canon’s next APS-C flagship, is expected to be announced for Photokina. It’s now 5 years since the EOS 7D was announced, a long time and a replacement is due.

Stay tuned.

(Update) Next Canon APS-C Flagship Will Come For Photokina, Prototypes Tested At 2014 FIFA World Cup

Canon APS-C Flagship
Fake EOS 7D Mark II (mock-up)

Little correction: the source contacted me again. Not prototypes are tested during 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but preproduction models undergoing last tests (in the field). I think it’s more about firmware fine-tuning or similar issues.

I have been told (thanks) that selected photographers will test prototypes ofthe upcoming Canon EOS 7D replacement during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brasil. The source (known to me) also told me that the EOS 7D replacement will be announced for Photokina 2014. Apparently Canon is going to announce a pro-grade APS-C camera, and wants to be sure to do everything right.

It is still not sure if the EOS 7D replacement will be called “EOS 7D Mark II”. According to my information it will not be named that way. The high-level video features rumored previously have been confirmed by the source. I still have no hints about the rumored hybrid viewfinder, though none of my source has ever told me that it will not be featured on Canon’s next APS-C flagship.

The EOS 7D (price & specs) has been announced in september 2009. If Canon announces the replacement for Photokina 2014, that would be 5 years after the 7D. A long time, and some people starts wondering if Canon will ever announce a new APS-C flagship. I think they will. Canon has the knowledge and the research facilities to produce a milestone APS-C camera. If only they want to do.

However, be aware that all the EOS 7D replacement rumors I and others reported so far are pretty vague, and sometimes contradicting. For me there is only one sure thing: Canon will announce a new APS-C flagship. Eventually.

Has The Canon EOS 7D Replacement Been Delayed To Q3 2014? (and EOS M3, 750D Tidbits)

EOS 7D Replacement
Fake EOS 7D Mark II (mock-up)

Another rumor in the long series of rumors about the replacement for the Canon EOS 7D.

Latest rumors were suggesting a possible announcement in Q2 2014. But a new rumor that surfaced on the web is suggesting we will see the successor of the EOS 7D (price & specs) not earlier than in Q3 2014. The rumor further suggests that the delay is due to manufacturing issues related to the Dual Pixel AF technology that is featured on Canon’s newest sensor generation. So the delay doesn’t only affect the successor of the 7D but, according to the rumor source, also the announcement of the successor of the EOS 700D (price & specs), and the replacement for the EOS 100D (price & specs).

The rumor suggests a “higher performance” version of the 70D’s sensor for the replacement of the EOS 7D. But was does “higher performance” mean? More megapixel? And then “cheaper versions” of the same sensor are said to be featured on the 700d and 100D replacements. Again, was does “cheaper version” mean?

The rumor sounds a bit weird to me. And my sources are still suggesting a Q2 announcement date for the 7D successor. That’s not to say it is sure we will see a 7D replacement announcement before summer. It appears as if Canon is doing everything right to keep their plans hidden. We can’t even be sure the replacement of the EOS 7D will be named EOS 7D Mark II. There have also been rumors stating that there will be no EOS 7D Mark II at all.

It appears that the reported rumor was passed to various European Canon dealers to let them know that there will be a delay (everyone out there?).

And then there is another rumor that surfaced, about two possible new EOS M (price & specs) models to be announced for Photokina in September 2014. Again, it is suggested there will be an entry-level and a pro-level EOS M system camera, both appear to have the moniker “M3”.

Since the EOS M was released there have always been rumors suggesting a prosumer model in the EOS M series. Personally I think there is a lot of wishful thinking concerning a prosumer EOS M3.

Canon EOS 7D Replacement To Come In May (and another SX60 mention)?

EOS 7D Replacement

Another rumor-bit in the almost endless Canon EOS 7D replacement rumors series.

After a series of rumors suggesting that there will no announcement soon, now a new rumor suggests that Canon may announce the successor of the EOS 7D (price & specs) in May. Note that there is no mention of an “EOS 7D Mark II” – it is still not sure the 7D replacement will have this moniker.

Finally, the rumor says there will also be a couple of new Powershots (the Powershot SX60 HS IS among them) and possibly also 2 new lenses.

Another Tidbit About An EOS 7D Replacement With Hybrid Viewfinder

EOS 7D Replacement

I reported about a possible new Canon EOS 7D (price & specs) replacement with a hybrid viewfinder before. Now another bit of information showed up on the web suggesting Canon’s next APS-C flagship might feature a hybrid viewfinder. While the rumor I am reporting here suggests that the hybrid viewfinder may not make into the final production model, I have been told that it will.

Some news on the specs front too: a sensor just below 25MP (24MP are rumored), dual card slots (SD + CF), and the 7D replacement is said “to have the most features at the software level of any Canon DSLR ever”. That fits with  earlier rumors, especially with those suggesting the 7D replacement will have innovative video features.

Take all with a grain of salt. The rumors concerning the EOS 7D replacement are somewhat contradicting, and so far nothing is sure. Not even the announcement date, which, seconding the latest rumors, should be somewhen during Q2 2014.

Canon DSLR Announcement For NAB 2014 (7D replacement on its way)?

Canon DSLR Announcement

Rumor has it that Canon may announce new DSLR gear for NAB 2014. The NAB show is usually the stage where  Cinema EOS and other videography gear is presented. So the question is: can we expect the EOS 7D replacement to be announced for NAB 2014?

The successor of the Canon EOS 7D (price & specs) is said to have outstanding video features, and it is rumored to be announced before end of Q2 2014. While it is true that NAB is mainly for the professional videographers out there, I wouldn’t exclude Canon could use the show to present their new APS-C flagship to the world. If the rumors about the EOS 7D replacement’s innovative video features are true, then NAB 2014 could be a great stage to introduce such a DSLR.

What else to expect from Canon this year? The usual suspects: new Cinema EOS lenses, the Powershot SX60 (replacement for the SX50) along with other Powershots. It will be interesting to see what exactly Canon will do following their statement that they will abandon the low-priced compact camera segment.

Stay tuned, there will be plenty of leaks in the next months.
