Philip Bloom Talks About Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF On The EOS C100 (Video)

Canon recently announced the possibility to unlock the innovative Dual Pixel CMOS Auto-Focus technology on the Canon EOS C100 (and C300) via a firmware update. We had a first impression about how Canon’s new AF technology works on the C100. Now it is Philip Bloom who tested Dual Pixel CMOS AF on the C100, and he shares his impressions in the video above (posted by Vimeo user Canon Pro).

Meet the C-Cup, An Improved Viewfinder For The Canon EOS C100

Found this project by Andrew Alden Miller at Kickstarter. An alternative viewfinder for the Canon EOS C100 (Adorama | B&H) .

A custom eyecup that fits perfectly to the Canon C100, transforming the EVF from “unusable” into ideal.

The C-Cup

The C-Cup is a traditionally shaped eyecup designed to fit perfectly to the Canon C100, improving the camera’s electronic viewfinder and overall ergonomics. Anyone who has picked up the camera knows that the C100’s EVF is not what it could be. In the C-Cup, we’ve designed a simple and inexpensive solution that makes the C100’s viewfinder what it should have been in the first place.

Viewfinder For The Canon EOS C100
Functionality and Compatibility
The C-Cup is designed to look and feel like an extension of the camera. It can be used with either eye, providing a comfortable, flexible cushion to push against and a solid third point of contact. It wraps around the eye to block out light, and it doesn’t disrupt the camera’s shape or balance. Simply put, the C-Cup allows you to comfortably use your C100’s EVF so you can fully take advantage of the camera’s excellent form-factor.We’ve designed the C-Cup as simply as possible so that we can make it as cheaply as possible. The C-Cup doesn’t add a diopter or lens – or anything for that matter. It simply changes the shape of the EVF’s cushion. However simple, the C-Cup dramatically changes your shooting experience for a reasonable price. To make the C-Cup inexpensively, we had to design it as a single piece. Because it’s a single piece that form-fits to the C100’s existing EVF, the C-Cup is not compatible with any other camera. The C-Cup is compatible with standard-sized chamois.

Canon EOS C100 Dual Pixel Auto-Focus Real World Test

It is not since long that the Dual-Pixel CMOS AF unblocking firmware update for the C100 (Adorama | B&H) and C300 (B&H | Adorama) is available to the public, and Newsshooter reader Frank Redward already tested this feature and made a video about it.

Some excerpts:

The AF speed is so quick it puts the Panasonic GH2 and GH3 to shame.

I expected single-shot AF to work well. What I didn’t expect was that tracking focus is now quite possible and reliable. When subjects move past the camera you can maintain focus. Focus can also be held while zooming with lenses that are not Parfocal. This makes the whole experience of using stills zooms more similar to an ENG lens – all through the wonders of DUAL Pixel CMOS AF. DSLR lenses were never designed to work like this but it works because the Dual Pixel CMOS AF is just so fast.

Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF is fantastic and works for me. It’s not 100% perfect but compared to what else is around it is amazing. It turns the C100 into a powerful real world shooting work horse. As an operator it adds a level of security and speed that’s very reassuring.

Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology was first featured on the EOS 70D(price & specs). For some good 70D deals see here.

Canon Article Gives Insight Into Dual Pixel AF Upgrade For Cinema EOS C100 (no sensor swap)

Upgrade For Cinema EOS C100
Canon EOS C100: Adorama | B&H

The Canon Professional Network Europe published a short yet comprehensive article about the Dual Pixel CMOS Auto-Focus update now available for the Canon Cinema EOS C100 (price & specs). The upgrade is now available via Canon Regional Competence Centres in Europe. If you read the press release it sounds as if the Dual Picel AF is already on board on the C100, since Canon states that the upgrade “utilises the existing Super35mm sensor in the EOS C100“. So are you paying €400/£340 just to unlock the Dual Pixel AF feature?

Canon has announced that a major feature upgrade – the addition of Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus – is now available for its EOS C100 Digital Cinema Camera via Canon Regional Competence Centres in Europe.

The EOS C100 is a large sensor video camera that’s designed with the single shooter in mind – it already offers functions such as One-Shot AF, Push Auto Iris, auto white balance and a built-in microphone to aid individual camerawork. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF upgrade for the EOS C100 will expand the shooting possibilities by providing smooth, accurate autofocus with a huge range of lenses. For cameramen requiring more precise control the responsiveness of the One-Shot AF function has been greatly enhanced with increased focus speed.

The upgrade, an extra-cost option, utilises the existing Super35mm sensor in the EOS C100 and can be booked in at the Canon Regional Competence Centres* in France, Germany, Italy, Sweden or the UK – see later on in this article for more details of how to book in your upgrade. * Please note: if your country is not mentioned below please contact your local Canon Video Service Centre to book in your EOS C100 upgrade.
