This Is The Nikon Z50, An APS-C Mirrorless Camera In The Z Lineup

Nikon Z50

It’s real. Nikon is going to release a new mirrorless camera in the Z lineup.

After the Nikon Z 6 and Nikon Z 7, both featuring a full frame sensor, the Nikon Z50 is the first camera with an APS-C sensor. The Nikon Z50 is expected to be announced in a few days.

Will Canon follow Nikon and also announce a mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor in the EOS R lineup? We think not. The difference between he two manufacturers is, Canon already has a successful mirrorless lineup with the EOS M system, Nikon has not. Although it’s technically feasible, it doesn’t make much sense for Canon.

Mirrorless

It seems Nikon is set to soon announce a new mirrorless camera in the Z lineup, the Z50.

  • 11 fps
  • No IBIS
  • Fixed EVF (not removable EVF as described in the latest design patents)
  • New Nikon EN-EL25 battery

  • The official announcement could be as early as next week
  • The Z50 will be the equivalent of the D7xxx DSLR cameras

  • The Nikon Z50 will look very similar to the Nikon Z1 prototype camera – it was described to me as a smaller version of the Z6/Z7

Industry News: Nikon Says Upcoming Nikon D6 Flagship Is “its most advanced DSLR”

Nikon D6

Nikon announced the development of the Nikon D6, the company’s next DSLR flagship. Nikon claims the Nikon D6 is “its most advanced DSLR to date”.

The Nikon D6 will be the direct competitor of the upcoming Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. Both cameras are expected to be released 2020 before the Summer Olympics. How will Canon react to Nikon’s “most advanced DSLR”?

Nikon press release:

Nikon is Developing the D6 Digital SLR Camera and the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm F/2.8E FL ED SR VR Telephoto Lens

MELVILLE, NY – Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce the development of the Nikon D6 professional DSLR camera and the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR telephoto zoom lens.

Nikon released the D1 digital SLR camera in 1999, making 2019 the 20th anniversary of the single-digit D series. Thanks to the imaging know-how cultivated over Nikon’s long history in camera development, Nikon’s professional DSLR cameras have continued to evolve by introducing some of the industry’s most advanced technologies and responding to the strict demands of professional photographers with the ultimate in performance and reliability, even in the most severe conditions. With the D6, Nikon is currently developing its most advanced DSLR to date.

This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the Nikon F mount. The new AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR F mount lens that Nikon is developing will provide professional photographers in fields such as sports photography with even greater support.

Nikon is striving to expand possibilities for imaging expression and leading the way in imaging culture with both DSLR and mirrorless camera systems, as well as a rich lineup of NIKKOR lenses.

Details including release dates, pricing and specifications for these products will be announced at a later date. For more information on the latest Nikon products, please visit www.nikonusa.com.

Nikon Might Have A Z Series Mirrorless Camera with APS-C Sensor Up Their Sleeve, Patent

Mirrorless

It seems Nikon is working on a Z series mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor.

That’s what a Nikon patent application suggests. Patent application  2018-15571 discusses such a camera. The camera depicted in the patent literature seems to have no EVF (Electronic View Finder).

We are a bit puzzled. After the release of the Canon EOS R, there have been some weird rumors Canon could release an EOS R model with an APS-C sensor, which we deem to be utterly unlikely. However, if Nikon is set to release a Z series mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor we can’t exclude Canon will do the same. There is however one big difference between the two manufacturer: Canon has a very successful APS-C mirrorless camera lineup with the EOS M, Nikon does not.
