[Review] Next EOS M Reviews And Hands-On Round-Up
Yeah, Hello New EOS World! Just want to list some of the last resources related to the EOS M (the ILC with the best sensor on the market) I have found on the web. First of all, all the pics you see above and below are by Jet Daisuke, and were shot in Tokyo a few days ago. Let’s start with an in-depth preview of the EOS M made by Camera Labs. From the verdict:
[...] having compatibility (with some limitations) to the entire EF lens catalogue which makes it extremely tempting to existing Canon DSLR owners. Second is having a decent sized APS-C sensor with performance that’s identical to an existing EOS DSLR. Third, for me anyway, is also sharing the movie capabilities of EOS DSLRs including a decent array of frame rates, full manual exposure control, audio level adjustment and the chance to connect an external microphone. Fourth is the standard hotshoe, which can accommodate any of the Canon Speedlites, and fifth is the decent touch-screen interface which includes pinch and swiping gestures. As for the hybrid AF system, this could become a big plus point or a negative depending on its performance in practice.
Next, DPreview has updated its first impressions review “with lots more information, including our own hands-on pictures of the camera and a video illustrating the shutter sound“. Nofilmschool is pasticularly interested to know if moire and aliasing have been improved. The hands-on is done from a film-makers point of view. Thoughts and impressions by Amin Sabet on The Online Photographer. Another hands-om at EOSHD. Finally, I would also like to feature two posts by techradar. First one analyzes the impact Canon’s entry in the mirrorless market may have on the industry, the second one discusses the possible dead of (Canon) DSLRs because of the raising of mirrorless system cameras.

10 months ago |When they put those bulky EF lenses on, what is the point of a small mirrorless camera?????

8 months ago |Strange, the thing that most impresses non-camera folk is the size of the camera body. No matter how obsolete it might be. My Canon 5D complete with battery pack aroused questions on “what camera was that” despite it being now a couple of models obsolete. Did not get any questions about the relatively innocuous 24mm f1.4 attached. So when you turn up with a 400mm f2.8 then eyes pop. Size is everything. Put a small, perfectly capable body on a large lens and everybody falls about laughing. Any camera mavin will know that camera bodies move on – but a good lens is forever. The size of a 5D with battery pack is not insubstantial. Therefore a smaller EVIL-type body does save a considerable amount of carrying heft. And yet words are said that you might as well carry a dslr once you commit to a large lens. The reality differs – any size/weigh saving even on the body is welcome. The real question might be “will the smaller body still do the job required?” If the answer is ‘yes” then no problem in saving some size/weight. But people will still laugh, for a while.

10 months ago |I just think it is soooooooo laughable that any serious photographer (serious enough to own $2000+ lenses)…would consider the Canon M as a useful attachment? …Hey guys…I think I have a dark cloth laying around from my 4×5 camera if you would like to rent it.
Maybe Canon should consider a Canon emblazoned cloth as a free giveaway with purchase?

10 months ago |no..the Canon M is really stupid. I own Canon equipment…lots of it. ….but I would never buy the M.to attach an L lens to. It’s embarrassing in my mind that that is how Canon is marketing this camera. Truly.
I am entitled to my opinion…but then I am a serious photographer…so perhaps I look at things differently.

10 months ago |Embarrassing how?
This is a medium that encompasses a very wide array of standards, from iPhones to the RedOne.
Moreover, this is a medium that seems to be screaming “If you got it, use it.”
Canon is just producing what the market has already announced that it is dead-set on buying.

10 months ago |Embarrassing? Please. Any competent photographer out there knows they don’t need a big camera to reflect his/her skill. This is a serious case of “compensation” at hand. Just because you have the biggest tool, doesn’t make you the best performer.
The EOS M can do plenty, and although I am not a particular fan of the EOS M, the smaller body makes it a very, very portable camera to bring alongside anywhere you go. As Chase Jarvis always says, the best camera is the camera that you can always bring along with you. You can’t expect to lug around huge, full fram DSLRS everywhere. Family vacations, a night in the downtown area with friends, etc. With the EOS M you can. And the fact that you can use other canon lens’ with it is just an added plus.
The notion of better camera = better photographer needs to stop.

10 months ago |That, or they’re simply showing that the camera will accept any lens from their range on it – which answers a question that would not doubt cross the lips of anyone thinking of buying one.
Still, haters gonna hate

10 months ago |Bob B. You have your own opinion. It is wrong.
I also feel that you may not be a pro. Because most pro’s understand that a company has to build a range of equipment from beginner to pro.
So please do us a favor and keep your ill informed opinions to yourself. Don’t even share them with your friends or family as the will become dumber because of you.
Rick
10 months ago |Calling someone’s opinion is wrong shows your lack of brain cells. You are an idiot. Here is a little bit of education for all you morons: you can agree or disagree with someone’s opinion but you can’t call it right or wrong because it’s his thought on the subject. Wake up Einsteins!

10 months ago |Just marketing blah…
one of the main points against the NEX system are the missing lenses, although you could use an adapter too. But now canon is emphasizing their adapter as a main feature, like “LOOK! You can use sooooo many lenses. It is already a full system!” Of course the do not say that large lenses destroy the sense of a ILC
Kevin
10 months ago |I’m afraid I agree with Bob B.
You can’t censor his viewpoint because you don’t agree with him.
Simon
10 months ago |I think you got me wrong. I agree with Bob and just wanted to say that using the M with large lenses does not make any sense, because handling will be difficult compared to a dslr-sized body and it destroys one of the main features of a mirrorless: the small size. Thats why I called the emphasizing on the existing lens lineup a kind of marketing blah…

Is it not the idea of an in-depth review to find out how the performance is in practice?
Gunnar
10 months ago |yes thats what i wonder.. the AF speed and precision is the main interesting/new thing in EOS M reviews as the rest should be very much in line with 650D reviews.

10 months ago |Best Sensor? says who? i doubt it can beat the 5n sensor, and probably even the OM-D EM-5 sensor.
with the sluggish AF, i don’t see this camera to be acceptable in today’s market, even Sony and Samsung can focus faster, and obviously a mile away from the m4/3 and Nikon 1 hybrid AF that was introduce a while ago.
The video capability is definitely interesting, can’t believe they have a mic input in this entry level model…..

10 months ago |The only thing I could possibly see useful with the EF lenses. Is the macro. The old 100mm 2.8 non L. The 65mm 1x-5x….
I mean your not going to put a 50mm 1.8 on that thing.
If it will allow it. Using sigma/tamron/tokina lenses on it would be nice.
A 10-20/11-18/11-16 would be nice.
I would not use a non native telephoto on it though. Unless you have one for your dslr. But if you have one. Your not the target for this camera….WHO IS THE TARGET FOR THIS CAMERA?!?!?!?! I DONT GET IT!!!
ohv
10 months ago |The target is someone who wants a small, simple camera with a big sensor and a long legacy of quality lenses that ALL work out of the box (with the adapter, but still). And new compact native lenses. This system replaces the entry-level rebel dslr in 5-10 years. You’ll have this, something over $1k (60D/7D probably full-frame), $3k pro (5D) and flagship. No rebels, no point to have that bulk and feature-set for beginners (once this evolves, obviously its not quite rebel-worthy). Moving from FD to EF canon got it wrong, they probably made a killing, but they got it wrong, this is the very bright silver lining that they are compatible with EF (EF-S had me worried).
I have a 60D and would buy a mirrorless second camera that I could stick a prime on (even a 50) and travel light. Big sensor image quality and zero bulk outside of the lens choice. Not this camera, but the 3rd or 4th version that has been refined.
Putting on a 400mm prime does look absurd (and is) but it is done here to show that you can (you would if you owned both, don’t lie).

10 months ago |Best sensor of any ILC? That’s a bold statement I haven’t seen backed up anywhere, yet. Fuji X-Pro 1? NEX? Olympus OM-D? Hello?

10 months ago |Yeah, the best sensor in a mirrorless camera! Other than the Nex-5n, Nex-7, Fuji X-Pro, and OM-D. But hey, who’s counting?
Gunnar

Gunnar
10 months ago |from what i´ve seen so far i would be very surprised if this camera is actually faster focusing with EF lenses than manual focusing with peaking mode on a NEX

10 months ago |Me! I’m the target market – moved from pro stills into documentary film making and this is what I wanted five years ago! Unlimited recording time and ability to continue to use my lenses – kinda – mine are all Nikon glass and manual focus is fine – so a Ed adapter to Nikon adapter to my Nikon glass and unlimited time to record my interviews
yes please! Or might just get a couple of rx-100′s … Waiting to see what gh3′s video quality is like first though – I have enough time since this is a oct release… Hopefully magic lantern adds all the goodies I’ve come to love on my 550d
if it’s hackable .. Fingers crossed right guys???!!! Will probably end up with rx-100s as the video qual is just under the gh2 and comes with a nice bit of glass.
Search ngpdt to see what I’ve been shooting in china for the past two months
my interviews just might save your life or a family members

10 months ago |The Canon M missed the mark. It’s too much a copy of the Sony NEX, especially the 18-55, at a much higher price.
Putting a super zoom on it looks ridiculous. In what application would that be better than a conventional EOS body that’s tried and true.
