Macro Telephoto Manual Focus Lens
Samyang Optics 100mm T3.1 VDSLR ED UMC MACRO is a macro telephoto manual focus cine lens designed for full frame sensor sizes. The maximum close-up magnification is 1:1. This macro lens with vivid color and soft out-focusing is the best lens for close-up images of flower and insects. It also can be used as a 100mm telephoto lens for landscapes and portraits.

VDSLR Cine Lens Features
Samyang 100mm T3.1 VDSLR ED UMC MACRO allows more delicate video work with T number marks. The focus gear ring is installed for follow focus system. You may change the aperture quietly and smoothly with the uncoupled aperture gear rings. Also, distance scale and T numbers are marked on both sides of the lens for convenience.

Optical Features
Samyang 100mm T3.1 has a low T number of T3.1. You may control the lens precisely when shooting under various exposure environment including relatively dark or too bright situations
This lens features 15 lenses in 12 groups especially including a high refractive lens (HR) and extra low dispersion lens (ED) to minimize color aberration and unnecessary light dispersion in order to offer high resolution throughout the image. Ultra Multi Coating (UMC) of Samyang Optics is used to optimize the light penetration and minimizes flare and ghost. With such optical construction, it has 0.307m of minimum focal length to film subjects in a very near distance.

Hardware Features
There are 9 aperture blades designed to be almost as a full circle when aperture is closed which expresses starlike ray clearly and beautifully. The frame of the lens is compact and solid since it is made of high-strength aluminum alloy so you can create trustworthy images. Also, detachable petal-shaped lens hood minimizes flare and ghost by sheltering lens from unnecessary lights.
Available for 10 camera mounts: Canon EOS, Nikon, Pentax K, Sony ∝, Canon M, Fujifilm X, Samsung NX, Sony E, FT, MFT.

Samyang Optics VDSLR II Cine Lens Line Up
Samyang 100mm T3.1 VDSLR ED UMC MACRO is one of Samyang Optics VDSLR II Cine Lens Line Up for full frame image sensor sizes. The lenses produce the same image color and have a united location of aperture and focus gear ring to maximize the convenience when filming.

Magic Lantern makes Linux boot on Canon DSLRs

The skilled folks at Magic Lantern did another trick: booting Linux operating system on Canon DSLRs. And no, this is not a joke. It’s a proof of concept so far, a working prototype, never the less it is another big step in the right direction. Watch the video above to see Linux booting on a Canon camera.

From Magic Lantern:

We, the Magic Lantern Team, are very proud to present you a new milestone in DSLR customization!

LINUX ON CANON EOS CAMERAS!

(edit: after playing a game, making it look like an April’s fool, we can ensure: this is not a fake!)

Starting from our recent discovery about display access from bootloader, we thought, hey, we could now have full control of the resources from this embedded computer. At this stage, we knew what kind of ARM processor we have (ARM 946E-S), how much RAM we have (256MB/512MB depending on the model), how to print things on the display (portable code), how to handle timers and interrupts, how to do low-level SD card access on select models (600D and 5D3), and had a rough idea where to start looking for button events.

So, why not trying to run a different operating system?

We took the latest Linux kernel (3.19) and did the first steps to port it. As we have nearly zero experience with kernel development, we didn’t get too far, but we can present a proof of concept implementation that…

…boots the Linux kernel 3.19 on Canon EOS DSLR cameras!
– it is portable, the same binary runs on all ML-enabled cameras (confirmed for 60D, 600D, 7D, 5D2 and 5D3)
– allocates all available RAM
– prints debug messages on the camera screen
– sets up timer interrupts for scheduling
– mounts a 8 MiB ext2fs initial ramdisk
– starts /bin/init from the initrd
– this init process is a selfcontained, libc-less hello world
– next step: build userspace binaries (GUI, etc)

No Joke: Canon Cinema C100 and C300 get crazy price drops

c100

May sound like a late April joke, but it isn’t. It’s a clear sign that Canon is going to announce new Cinema cameras at NAB 2015.

Canon has reduced the price of both the C100 and C300 to an insane level. The Canon Cinema C100 is on sale for $2,999 (body only) B&H Photo | Adorama), and the C300 for $6,499 (body only) B&H Photo | Adorama).

All Canon C100 deals at Adorama | all C300 deals at Adorama

Canon Patent for new automatic Vignette Correction Processing Algorithm

2015_56709_fig04b

Egami (translated) spotted a patent filed by Canon for an image processing algorithm that corrects lens vignetting by varying the exposure time according to the image height, i.e. applying different exposure times to different spots in the image area.

One thing to note, in my opinion: this patent implicitly also refers to a new sensor tech. Some excerpts from the patent description:

The present invention relates to the control method of the imaging device which has an image sensor in which exposure control is possible for every region, and the Method of amendment of an image.

In the imaging device which photos an object by acquiring an optical image via a lens, in the image of the photoed object, what is called a light-falloff-at-edges phenomenon in which light volume is deteriorated occurs as it goes to an image periphery from the central part of the image.

It is known that a light-falloff-at-edges phenomenon will be decided by the relation of the characteristic of the lens with which an imaging device is provided, and the characteristic of a solid state image pickup device. Specifically, it is a relation with the position of the solid state image pickup device to an effective image circle (region where light hits uniformly), and the amount of light falloff at edges is decided uniquely. However, it will be the requisite that the effective pixel center of a solid state image pickup device and the optical axis center of a lens are corresponding in this case. It is dependent also on the f-stop of a lens, and the amount of light falloff at edges has an omission condition of light volume remarkable in the opening and small diaphragm side. In the opening side, although the incident light in a lens center enters as a general lens characteristic with circular light flux, since the incident light in the corner of a lens always passes along the corner, light will be kicked, incident light becomes the light flux of elliptic form, and light volume is deteriorated.
