Canon Patent To Automatically Select Best Photos From Burst Mode (and save them in RAW)

Canon Patent

As usual, machine translated patents are hard to grasp. Feel free to correct me in the comment section if you think I got it wrong. I will edit the post if I was wrong.

Egami (translated) spotted a patent filed by Canon for an algorithm that selects the best shots from burst mode, and saves these pics in RAW. The not so good pics are kept in JPG format. This technology appears to be particularly interesting for cameras with high fps (frames per second), like the EOS 7D Mark II. Note: I think the patent refers to burst mode, though the machine translation gives back the term “panning”.

Another Canon EOS 7D Mark II Hands-On Review (AF is superb, noise very low)

EOS 7D Mark II

Thanks for the tip.

Wildlife and nature photographer, and Canon Northern Explorer of Light, Christopher Dodds posted his first impression of Canon’s new APS-C flagship, the EOS 7D Mark II. A pre-production model was used.

He writes (emphasis added):

[…] the new camera performed flawlessly. I was blown-away by the Dual Digic-6 processor driven auto focus system. In low contrast,  cloudy and slightly foggy conditions, shooting white birds against near white backgrounds, the auto-focus was unbeatable. I started with my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens, and quickly went through all of the lenses and extender combinations to see if there were limits. Even shooting with a lens+extender combination with a maximum aperture of f/8 (600mm f/4L IS USM II and 2X III extender … yes, 600mm  with doubler =1200mm X 1.6 crop factor= 1920mm), the auto-focus proved it may even be slightly faster/better than the professional Canon 1DX. Throw in 10 frames per second capture rate and no noticeable shutter lag and this truly is a dream camera body for bird photographers and action/sports/press photographers alike.

Mr. Dodds was also impressed by the low noise of the EOS 7D Mark II sensor.
