Next Canon Full-Frame DSLRs Will Feature Dual Pixel AF (and 6D Mark II has tilt-able display)

A trusted source told me that the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 6D Mark II will feature a sensor with Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS Auto-Focus technology. Apparently Dual Pixel AF will not come with the EOS-1D X’s next iteration. The same source told me that the EOS 6D Mark II will feature a tilt-able display.

Previous rumor has it that the EOS 5D Mark IV will be announced in 2015, and that it will feature 4k video.

CW’s take:

Dual Pixel AF on Canon’s next enthusiast and semi-pro full-frame DSLRs makes sense. First, Dual Pixel AF is a groundbreaking technology that has to and will be featured on all next Canon DSLRs. Second, Dual Pixel AF is a videographers dream. The 5D Mark IV will be committed to videography as the 5Ds before. Third, Canon just announced their first STM zoom lens with EF mount (i.e. for FF DSLRs), the EF 24-105mm IS STM; Dual Pixel AF and STM lenses work perfectly together. The fact that there is a full-frame STM zoom lens gives some credit to the rumor.

Egami spotted a patent filed by Canon for an apodization filter. Such a filter should not decrease light and allows for phase difference detection

Interview With Canon’s Masaya Maeda (higher res sensors coming, also for EOS-M, more mirrorless in the near future)

Dpreview posted an interview hold at Photokina 2014 with Mr. Masaya Maeda, Managing Director and Chief Executive, Image Communication Products Operations at Canon.

There are some rather interesting snippets I want to quote.

Q: Currently no Canon camera offers more than 22MP. Do your DSLR customers ask for higher resolution?

A: Yes. We know that many of our customers need more resolution and this is under consideration. In the very near future you can expect us to show something in terms of mirrorless and also a higher resolution sensor.

High resolution sensors coming in Canon DSLRs, and for EOS M system sounds good! :-)

About the EOS 7D Mark II:

Q: You’ve had a long time to get feedback from 7D owners – what did they want most in a replacement?

A: Besides a bigger sensor, they wanted the same sort of features found in the EOS-1D X. We did a lot of interviews with 7D users – more than 5000 people in total – and we think that in the EOS 7D Mark II we got very close to achieving EOS-1D-type features in a lightweight body.

The Powershot G7 X has a Sony sensor. Canon thinks…

Q: […] we’ve learned is that the sensor in the G7X is not made by Canon. Does this represent a new philosophy at Canon?

We select the best sensor, whoever the manufacturer is. That’s our policy.

Canon Powershot G7 X Features A Sony BSI-CMOS Sensor

A lot suggests the Canon Powershot G7 X is featuring a Sony 20-MP 1” BSI CMOS sensor. The same sensor that’s mounted on the Sony RX100 III and Panasonic FZ1000.

In a meeting with Dpreview‘s staff, Canon stated that the sensor in the Powershot G7 X is a “BSI-CMOS” sensor, and that the sensor is not manufactured by Canon.

A similar hint comes from PetaPixel in their G7 X vs RX100 III comparison. They write:

Surprisingly the Canon G7 X and Sony RX100 III could be stepbrothers. Canon allegedly admitted the 20MP 1″ sensor was not developed internally, fueling speculations that G7 X could be using the same Sony 20-MP 1” BSI CMOS sensor. Any difference between the two rivals can be attributed to the lens and design philosophy of the engineering teams from both sides.

Thom Hogan from gearophile writes:

What we get in the US$700 G7 X is the Sony 20mp 1” sensor coupled with a 24-100mm (equivalent) f/1.8-2.8 lens, a 1m dot touchscreen, a built in ND filter, 1080P/60 video and some other PowerShot stuff. […] it even has a “selfie” mode.

As you can see, it appears the Powershot G7 X is indeed featuring Sony’s sensor. A Sony 1 inch sensor coupled with Canon’s excellent optics sounds good to me. The G7 X has a longer zoom range than the Sony RX 100 III.

There is also a serious hint by Canon itself that they are working on another compact camera with possibly an 1 inch sensor. And that’s not all, another hint by Canon itself suggests the company is researching the possibility of developing a new mount type, and that they could join the m4/3 standard.
