Canon Investigating The Possibility Of A New Mount System For Smaller Sensors (Update, Canon may join 4/3)

Canon
Canon EOS M2

Update: thanks to one of our readers (in the comment section) I can provide a better summarisation of the interview:

According to the interview, Canon is looking into developing a smaller system than the EF-M stemming from the demand for miniaturization. They would even consider joining M43 if they find it is appropriate to do so. Development for EF and EF-M will continue as normal.

dc.watch posted an interview with Mr. Masaya Maeda, executive director of Canon Image Communication Business Division.

The machine translation is not easy to grasp. However, it appears that Canon is considering the development of a new mount type, different from EF and EF-M mounts, for system cameras with sensors smaller than APS-C. At least that’s what I was able to get from the translated interview (if someone speaking Japanese can help that would be greatly appreciated).

Canon Announces Development of New 100-400mm DO Lens, And More DO and EF-M Lenses

Canon’s new EF 40mm f/4L IS DO II (Adorama | B&H Photo)

c|net posted an article about Canon and Photokina 2014. There are snippets of an interview with Canon technical advisor Chuck Westfall.

Concerning the replacement of the EF 100-4mm f/4.5-5.6L, Mr. Westfall said:

“a new model is in the works […]. It’s definitely on the boards for replacement”

However, Mr. Westfall declined to say anything about when we will see the new 100-400mm lens. In the past we saw a patent for a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS DO lens with diffractive optical elements (DO)

Moreover, Mr. Westfall confirmed that there will be more DO lenses in the future.

Canon is working to spread a technology called diffractive optics, or DO, into more lenses

Finally, the lenses for the EOS M system. c|net writes that “during a press conference here, the company [Canon] committed to adding more [EF-M lenses]” .

Canon Set To Announce A 46MP Professional DSLR Next Month?

Canon

Thanks Sally

On fredmiranda.com a thread showed up where it is suggested that Canon might release a 46MP professional DSLR next month, for PhotoPlus in New York City.

The supposed high-res camera is said to come for $8,000-$9,000. This rumor is less implausible than you may think. Just a few days ago a truly authentic looking image of an 11-24mm f/4L lens showed up. If the lens is real it might point to an announcement to come soon.

Stay tuned…
