Canon press release:

Canon UK inspires tomorrow’s creative minds with Creative Media Camp

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 11 August 2016 – Canon UK, a leader in imaging solutions, today announced ‘3 Steps’ as the winning team of Creative Media Camp – a summer camp, aimed at inspiring young people’s creativity. The initiative was run by The Essex Collaborative Outreach Network in partnership with the Ideas Foundation and Canon.

Twenty students took part in the programme at South Essex College, which ran from 1-5 August. Students attended workshops, led by industry mentors and university academics, to help them learn about courses and careers in the creative industries. The participants worked in teams to answer a brief set by Canon, related to storytelling around travel, fashion or sport. The purpose of the programme was to work collaboratively with companies to promote the creative industry as a place to work, to inspire young people to become more creative and offer a space for ideas and knowledge sharing.

Canon patent for “teardrop-shaped” micro lenses (to reduce vignetting)

canon patent

canon patent

A Canon patent for teardrop-shaped microlenses for the company’s image sensors was spotted by Image Sensors World. Such a microlens design should cut vignetting and other color aberrations.

The present invention provides a solid state image sensor including a pixel array having a plurality of pixels arranged therein, each of the plurality of pixels including a photoelectric conversion device and a microlens configured to guide incident light to the photoelectric conversion device, the microlens having a lower surface, on an exit side of the incident light, which has a convex shape with respect to the photoelectric conversion device, with a vertex of the convex shape shifting from a center position of the microlens to a central side of the pixel array.

And…

The surface of each microlens 103 which is located on the exit side of incident light, that is, a lower surface 102, will be described. The lower surface 102 of the microlens 103 has an asymmetrical shape with a position nearest to the photoelectric conversion device 104 (a position at which the thickness from a center plane 130 of the microlens 103 is the maximum) shifting from the center position of the microlens 103 to the central side of the pixel array 110A. The lower surface 102 of the microlens 103 has a convex shape with respect to the photoelectric conversion device 104.

Each microlens 103 is formed from a material having a higher refractive index than a material in contact with the lower surface 102 at a position between the microlens 103 and the photoelectric conversion device 104. The microlens 103 is formed from, for example, a color filter material.

August 25/26 announcement information

The EOS 5D Mark IV will start shipping in the mid of September 2016. Launch price should be €3,799 in Europe and $3,299 in the USA. Please note that I am not 100% sure about the US price, could also be $3,499. Maybe $3,499 is more likely.

No price hint We know the price for the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM ($1,099) and EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM ($2,199) lenses. The EF 24-105mm will most likely start to ship with the EOS 5D Mark IV (it’s a new kit option), while the EF 16-35mm may be seen a bit later, probably in October.

The following gear (and new EOS 7D Mark II kits) will be announced to the world on August 25/26:
