Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM review, it’s a no-brainer (photozone)

Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM EF-M 22mm Canon Lenses

Well known lens testing site Photozone reviewed the Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens.

Canon did a good job once more. The Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM may be a tiny lens but it is an impressive performer nonetheless. The center quality is great throughout the relevant aperture range and the borders are also very impressive. There’s some softness in the image corners at large apertures though and this is somewhat emphasized by a bit of field curvature. Stopping down lifts the corner performance significantly. […] Image distortions are negligible and lateral CAs are well controlled. In critical scenes you may spot some purple fringing at f/2 but that’s rather normal for a such a large aperture lens. On the downside the vignetting is on the high side even when stopped down. The bokeh is Okay for a moderate wide-angle lens but you will notice some smearing effects in difficult scenes. Read the review.

The EF-M 22mm f/2 STM is a razor-sharp lens, and the one of the two interesting lenses for the EOS M system (the other one is the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM). At $160 it’s definitely a no-brainer. It’s my prefered lens on the EOS M3. Canon Watch’s EOS M3 review is here.

Unfortunately for us, Canon managed to release just four lenses for the EOS M system. However, there is a rumor suggesting Canon may soon announce a score of new EF-M lenses.

Handevision IBELUX 40mm f/0.85, world’s fastest lens for EOS M now selling at $1,199 ($700 off)

IBELUX 40mm F/0.85

The Handevision IBELUX 40mm f/0.85 is the world’s fastest lens for your EOS M3 (and other mirrorless cameras), and it got another price drop, selling at $1,199 (B&H Photo | Amazon) after a $700 price drop from the regular price. Still not a budget lens but consider it goes f/0.85. On the EOS M3’s APS-C sensor the IBELUX 40mm f/0.85 becomes a 64mm. And it weighs as much as the Zeiss Otus 85mm.

LensRentals felt the pulse of the Handevision IBELUX 40mm f/0.85 and found that it outperforms the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L in the center. Below is a short video-review of the IBELUX by Matt Granger (not on an EOS M). Canon Watch’s EOS M3 review is here.

  • Canon EF-M Mount/APS-C Format
  • 64mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Aperture Range: f/0.85 to f/22
  • Concave Front Lens Element
  • 250° Manual Focus Throw
  • Ten-Blade Circular Diaphragm
  • Metal Lens Barrel & Integrated Lens Hood
  • Minimum Focus Distance: 2.5′

Lots of Canon announcements coming in October (new EF-M lenses, PowerShot G16 & S120 replacements, more)? [CW4]

EOS M3

It appears October is the month when we will see some new Canon gear. What can we expect?

An ImagePROGRAF Pro-1000 17″ printer, anticipated by Canon’s Masaya Maeda in a recent interview. Most probably we will also see the PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120 replacements. We do not have any specs so far. And it appears, and I am pretty sure about it, that we will eventually see the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens for EOS M system. This lens leaked months ago, and according to information I got it should have a retractable design. It may well be the next kit lens for the EOS M3, which would also explain why we can buy the M3 only with the 18-55mm IS STM lens (in EU). It’s since some time that I have the feeling Canon is clearing stocks of the nowadays dated EF-M 18-55mm IS STM lens. The rumor suggests that also another EF-M lens will be announced, it could be a prime. It’s very likely the listed stuff will indeed be announced.

Canon Rumors, where the rumor leaked, speculates that there could be more to get announced: a DSLR announcement (though no major release), which may be the Rebel SL2, a new EF-S lens, and maybe some more EOS M related announcements.

Stay tuned…

The Fujin Mark II lens sucks, and that’s what it’s expected to do (sensor cleaning gadget)

We had this cool gadget on our radar last year. Now a Mark II release is about to hit the shelves.

What is the Fujin Mark II? It’s a pocketable vacuum cleaner you can mount on your Canon DSLR as if it was a lens. The Fujin Mark II features an electric fan and a stator to suck up any dust particle from your sensor. Cool, isn’t it? I never tried one so I can’t say how effective it is, but it looks good to me. Have a look at the video above. The Fujin Mark II will be released at the end of September, and sells at $150, a 5 filters pack sells for $18. It’s also available on eBay
