The EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS

It’s the lens Canon makes out of sympathy after almost 10 years of rumoring. Just kidding :-)

Digicame-Info (translated) reports that the EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II lens will soon be announced. No specs so far (but I am sure they will surface soon). For the time being all we know is that the hood will have model number ET-83D, and that it doesn’t appear to be a big evolution from the 16 year old predecessor.

Edit: I got the last point wrong from the machine translated text. In the meantime I have been told that you can expected a substantial evolution from the previous model.

This is probably the Canon rumor with the longest history of all (first mention dates back at least to 2008). And now it surfaces again. The rumor is always the same: someone told someone that the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II will soon be announced.

A few more rumors about this lens and Canon will probably make it out of mercy ;-)

A new rumor suggests Canon may announce the replacement for the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS in the next weeks, possibly the last week of February or the first week of March. Availability may not be immediate. Take with a grain of salt.

The EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS has just been examined by DxOMark. A replacement is long overdue.

Prototypes of the replacement for the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS are said to undergo testing at the Winter Olympics in Sochi in February next year. As usual in such cases, selected photographers will have the opportunity to use the lens. It is not sure if the Winter Olympics are the final testbed for the lens, and if we can expect an announcement soon after
