Specialized lens testing site photozone posted their analysis of the new Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III, a highly regarded professional lens that comes at $2,199. The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III was tested on a Canon EOS 5Ds R.

From the conclusion:

The Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 USM L III is, of course, an improvement over its predecessors. If you stop down a bit you can achieve edge-to-edge sharp images at all focal lengths even on a 50 megapixel camera. That’s quite an achievement! The image corners are a bit soft at f2/8 and the extreme ends of the zoom range though. However, in real life that’s rarely a showstopper. If you are using a camera with a more moderate pixel count, you don’t really need to worry because the lens is plenty sharp enough in this case. Lateral CAs are generally very well controlled. A substantial weakness is the amount of vignetting at the wide end though. When designing a lens you have to balance the different optical aberrations and Canon obviously decided to favour sharpness over vignetting this time. Read the review…

The review comes with MFT and distortion charts, images samples and plenty of information about this lens.

LensRentals felt the pulse of the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III

From a resolution standpoint, the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8  III is the best f/2.8 wide-angle zoom available. You might be better served with the f/4 IS and some money in your pocket. There are also some very good wide-angle f/2.8 zooms available from third party manufacturers that are a lot less expensive and might offer more bang-for-the-buck. But if your style of photography needs the highest resolution you can get with a wide-angle lens, well this is it.

Another point in favour of this professional lens:

[…] sample variation for wide-angle zooms is usually pretty significant, but the new EF 16-35mm f/2.8 III keeps that under pretty good control

All this goodness comes at a price, it’s $2,199.

The folks at Photography Blog published their comprehensive review of the new Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III, a lens that many photographers would like to have in their bag.

From the conclusion:

The new Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM is an outstanding but also very expensive ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that will appeal most to landscape, reportage and wedding photographers looking for a well-built, weather-proof optic with the main advantage of a fast and constant f/2.8 aperture for low-light hand-held work.

[…] Image quality is quite simply fantastic. Chromatic aberrations are almost completely absent, bokeh is impressive despite the wide-angle nature of the lens, and the Subwavelength and an Air Sphere coatings successfully prevent contrast loss attributable to flare. The only real optical issues are some obvious vignetting and barrel distortion at the 16mm wide-angle focal length, and a slight lack of sharpness when shooting wide-open at f/2.8 at the 28mm and 35mm focal lengths.
