Canon EOS 80D review (Jack of All Trades)

Photographer and reviewer Dustin Abbott posted another one of his comprehensive reviews, this time it’s the Canon EOS 80D that gets scrutinized. And it ain’t no paper tiger, according to the reviewer.

In the conclusion he writes:

While there were a number of people that looked at the announcement of the 80D and said, “yawn”, I have yet to hear from anyone who has used the camera who didn’t love it. It is more camera in the field than it is on paper, and the key word that I and others are using of it is versatility. It just seems to be pretty much good at everything. It handles well, has great image quality, and is generally a joy to shoot with. The upgraded AF system makes it a viable competitor to the EOS 7D Mark II, though that camera should probably still be the ultimate choice for sports or wildlife shooters. But the Canon EOS 80D is the jack of all trades, good enough at everything to make many owners very happy.

You can watch the 17 minutes video-review below, or go for the written review (many sample pics).

There is a very good EOS 80D deal going on right now on eBay, check it out if you are interested.

The next video is particularly interesting. It analyses and compares the EOS 80D’s ISO extension and latitude, something we already knew the 80D was doing very good.

The video below compares the EOS 80D with the EOS 70D to see if the moire problem has been solved.

Canon EOS 80D review, an all-around excellent DSLR (Imaging Resource)

APS-C EOS 80d Canon Eos 90d

Canon EOS 80D: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, Canon Canada, Canon USA

Canon EOS 80D at a glance:

  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC
  • RGB+IR 7560-Pixel Metering Sensor

Imaging Resource put their comprehensive Canon EOS 80D review online, and it’s another highly positive review about what starts to appear to be an absoute winner for Canon. As IR puts it: “an all-around excellent DSLR with a good combination of image quality, advanced features, great build quality, and a good price point“.

In the conclusion they write:

The camera is an excellent, well-built DSLR that produces reasonably sharp, detailed photographs and high quality Full HD video. It’s comfortable to hold with classic Canon DSLR styling, ergonomics and controls, and its versatile AF system is great — especially thanks to Dual Pixel CMOS AF. The 80D feels like a tried-and-true Canon DSLR — nothing over the top, ground-breaking or revolutionary, just what it’s meant to be. It’s a straightforward camera that works well, performs well, and captures pleasing images. Read the review…

Canon EOS 80D review (best raw dynamic range of any APS-C Canon camera, DPReview reports)

Photographic authority DPReview posted their exhaustive review of Canon’s new mid-level, enthusiast-oriented EOS 80D. As seen before, Canon developed a new sensor tech with much better dynamic range than previous sensors. In fact, DPReview states that the EOS 80D has the best raw dynamic range of any APS-C Canon camera.

From the conclusion:

As an upgrade from the 70D, there’s a lot to like about the 80D, but possibly not enough to warrant trading up, unless you’re interested in video. however if you’re considering upgrading from a Rebel camera, the 80D is an excellent and natural progression in Canon’s DSLR family. And if you’re considering the 80D against the 7D Mark II, the choice is less clear and mostly boils down to what you value more, a better AF system and AF ergonomics (in the 7D Mark II), or better dynamic range,  an articulating touchscreen, and that impressive Dual Pixel AF system.

[…]

A very well-rounded camera, the 80D’s main appeal centers around ease-of-use. It is well-constructed, offers ample control points, and an easy-to-use design. Its image quality lags slightly behind the best cameras in this class (the main reason it did not earn our highest award), but overall it’s still extremely competitive. We’re very encouraged to note that the 80D offers the best raw dynamic range of any APS-C Canon camera to date. Read the review…
