Likes

– Fast maximum aperture

– Excellent image quality

– Versatile ultra-wide angle focal range

– Moisture resistance

Dislikes

– Not compatible with conventional lens filters

– Big and heavy

Although US$1,299 is certainly not an inconsequential sum of money, the Tamron SP 15-30mm f2.8 Di VC USD G2 is one of the best bang for your buck when it comes to ultra-wide angle zooms currently available on the market. While Tamron’s original 15-30mm f2.8 was an impressive lens in its own right, the addition of moisture resistance along with enhanced vibration compensation and improved lens coatings are certainly welcomed improvements. We just wish Tamron would put the lens on a diet so that it was less cumbersome to use, but that would probably require that they bend the laws of physics. With that said, we’d still recommend this lens to anyone that’s in the market for a versatile ultra-wide angle zoom lens.

Photography Blog reviewed the Tokina Opera 16-28mm F/2.8 lens for full frame DSLRs.

From their conclusion:

Sporting a more modern design that made its debut on the Opera 50mm f/1.4, this lens is well-suited to Canon and Nikon’s high-end full-frame DSLRs in both styling and size. 

Less appealing is the slightly sluggish, audible AF system, the inability to fit a traditional filter system, and the lack of any weather-sealing, whilst the push/pull focal clutch mechanism is satisfyingly retro but less convenient than automatic manual focus over-ride.

Image quality is very good. Chromatic aberrations are well controlled and bokeh is surprisingly appealing when shooting at 28mm. 

The only real optical issues are obvious vignetting and some barrel distortion at at the 16mm wide-angle focal length, a slight lack of centre sharpness when shooting wide-open at f/2.8 throughout the zoom range, and rather poor corner sharpness between f/2.8-5.6.

Canon EOS RP Review (beautifully compact yet fully functional body, D. Abbott)

Photographer and review Dustin Abbott posted his exhaustive review of the Canon EOS RP, the company’s latest full frame mirrorless camera and the first real entry-level camera.

In his conclusion D. Abbott writes:

[…] the Canon EOS RP is a mixed bag.  In some ways I am more inclined to be charitable to it, as I enjoy enjoying the camera due to have wonderfully familiar ergonomics and that it fits the hand so much better than many competitors and because the price point is so reasonable.  For these reasons I suspect a lot of people will end up buying an EOS RP.  I certainly would choose it over a Canon 6D Mark II for the simple reason that the autofocus system is better by orders of magnitude and the new RF lenses (while expensive) have been excellent.  The seamless experience in using EF lenses via the Canon adapters is also compelling.  But Canon’s “blind-eye” approach to what competitors offer has become somewhat vexing.  The EOS RP’s sensor is not really competitive with much of anything (it is surpassed by a number of APS-C sensors in certain areas) and the video performance is near insulting…to me.

Photography Blog posted their full review of the new Canon Rebel SL3, aka EOS 250D aka EOS 200D Mark II aka Kiss X10.

From the conclusion:

The Canon EOS 250D / Rebel SL3 is a rather modest upgrade of the 2-year-old Canon EOS 200D / Rebel SL2, principally adding 4K video recording, a much-improved Live View experience and longer battery life to justify its introduction.

Canon have been much more successful in improving the EOS 250D’s live view mode, which does benefit from using the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. Being able to compose using the vari-angle touchscreen and choose from one of the 3,975 AF points, complete with face/eye detection, is a real advantage, making the EOS 250D one of the best DSLRs around in terms of its live view mode.

On the other hand, having such an excellent live view system does highlight the camera’s rather basic optical viewfinder, which still relies on a rudimentary 9-point AF system and doesn’t offer the same rich experience as a true mirrorless camera. The headline grabbing battery life of over 1,000 shots also relies on using the optical viewfinder, rather than the much better live view mode.
