Press release:

New advanced, super high-quality, fast, ultra-wide-angle zoom lens

SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A041)

August 31, 2018, Saitama, Japan–Tamron Co., Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Ajisaka), a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the launch of a new high-speed ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, the SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A041), for full-frame DSLR cameras.

With a well-established reputation for ultra-high-quality wide-angle zoom lenses with its Model A012, Tamron carries on the tradition of high optical performance with the new SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A041). By incorporating an XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) lens element, as well as multiple LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements, the distortion and lateral chromatic aberrations so common in wide-angle shooting have been greatly minimized. Furthermore, a newly developed AX (Anti-reflection eXpand) Coating has been applied to reduce ghosting and flare more thoroughly than ever before. The optical performance in this high-speed F/2.8 ultra-wide-angle zoom lens with a focal length starting at 15mm is outstanding. In addition, the built-in Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) enables vastly improved AF speed and precision, and image stabilization. This is a next-generation super high-quality, high-speed ultra-wide-angle zoom lens with first-rate optics and a wide range of features that serve to revitalize the shooting experience. With the release of this model, three* of Tamron’s high-speed F/2.8 zoom lens with VC (Vibration Compensation) are now G2 (Generation 2).

Tamron press release:

Tamron releases the smallest, lightest ultra-wide-angle zoom lens in its class

A sophisticated balance of outstanding optics and matchless mobility

17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037)

August 6, 2018, Saitama, Japan–Tamron Co., Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Ajisaka), a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the launch of a new ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, the 17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037), for 35mm full-frame DSLR cameras.

The vision behind the Model A037 is that of an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, which has a separate concept from SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A012), with superb image quality and easy portability. At just 90mm (3.5 in) in length and 460g (16.2 oz) in weight, it is the smallest and lightest in its class. The focal length ranges from an ultra-wide 17mm that is suitable for professional landscape photography to a standard 35mm good for snapshot photography. As for F-stops, the wide-angle end is a large aperture F/2.8, and at the telephoto end is a fast F/4. The Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating, help to enhance the user’s photographic experience. For those looking to try out an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for the first time, as well as having a lens that is easily portable, the A037 is the definitive choice.

Product Information

1. High-performance imaging for shooting vast landscapes in sharp detail

The optical construction (15 elements in 10 groups) uses four LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements to minimize axial chromatic aberrations that can occur with ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses. With two properly positioned GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lenses, distortion and other aberration can be satisfactorily corrected as well. Being the smallest and lightest in its class* and dedicated to high quality imaging, the engineers have paid particular attention to size. The lens has also been carefully designed to allow peripheral point image reproducibility and thereby facilitate a high degree of sharpness and contrast.
The Minimum Object Distance (MOD) for the entire zoom range is a short 0.28m (11 in), so background blurring is still possible when opening the aperture and approaching the subject close-up with this ultra-wide-angle zoom.
* Among ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses using an F-stop faster than F/4 for 35mm full-frame DSLR cameras. (As of July 2018: Tamron)

Tamron 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD Review (DPReview)

Tamron 70-210mm F/4 DI VC USD

Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC USD at a glance:

  • EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/4 to f/32
  • Ultrasonic Silent Drive Autofocus Motor
  • VC Image Stabilization
  • Fluorine-Coated Front Element
  • Moisture-Resistant Construction
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm
  • Compatible with TAP-in Console

DPReview tested the new Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC USD, a relatively inexpensive option in this zoom range.

From their conclusion:

The Tamron 70-210mm F4 is a great telephoto lens option with relatively few shortcomings considering its reasonable price point. Its optical performance should represent a meaningful upgrade for those using entry-level 55-200mm or 55-250mm kit zooms, and the F4 aperture saves weight and expense compared to constant F2.8 aperture alternatives.

[…]

Our direct comparison with the Canon 70-200mm F4L II IS shows that lens to be a generally better performer, especially wide-open. But in our experience the Tamron balances well on more entry-level cameras, the autofocus kept up just fine with everything we threw at it, and if you take the time to shoot Raw, the lack of in-camera optical corrections is neither here nor there. Read the review…

Another quite positive review for the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC USD. It may not be able to compete with Canon’s “L” glass but it appears to deliver bang for the bucks.

Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD (A034) review (D. Abbott)

Tamron 70-210mm F/4

Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC USD at a glance:

  • EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/4 to f/32
  • Ultrasonic Silent Drive Autofocus Motor
  • VC Image Stabilization
  • Fluorine-Coated Front Element
  • Moisture-Resistant Construction
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm
  • Compatible with TAP-in Console

Dustin Abbott concluded his exhaustive review of the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD (A034), a relatively inexpensive option in this zoom range.

From the conclusion:

There’s a lot to like about Tamron’s most recent lens, from the build to the excellent magnification to the excellent price. The Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC provides a nice alternative to existing options, yet Canon may have upstaged Tamron with the recent announcement of the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II, a heavily updated and improved lens. Still, for those on a budget, the reality that the new Canon will cost 50% more than the Tamron might still be a compelling factor. At the same time, however, I cannot deliver complete approbation of the A034, as I felt that in some areas it underperformed my expectations. It is a sharp lens, but is clearly outclassed by the larger Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 lens. I found the autofocus a little slower than expected (the recent Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC was much faster) and also found the autofocus a little more prone to hunting in some situations.

Dustin’s review comes with sample images, comparisons and more information about the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD. The video below sums it up very well.
