DPReview tested the new Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC USD, a relatively inexpensive option in this zoom range.

From their conclusion:

The Tamron 70-210mm F4 is a great telephoto lens option with relatively few shortcomings considering its reasonable price point. Its optical performance should represent a meaningful upgrade for those using entry-level 55-200mm or 55-250mm kit zooms, and the F4 aperture saves weight and expense compared to constant F2.8 aperture alternatives.

[…]

Our direct comparison with the Canon 70-200mm F4L II IS shows that lens to be a generally better performer, especially wide-open. But in our experience the Tamron balances well on more entry-level cameras, the autofocus kept up just fine with everything we threw at it, and if you take the time to shoot Raw, the lack of in-camera optical corrections is neither here nor there. Another quite positive review for the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC USD. It may not be able to compete with Canon’s “L” glass but it appears to deliver bang for the bucks.

Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD (A034) review (D. Abbott)

Dustin Abbott concluded his exhaustive review of the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD (A034), a relatively inexpensive option in this zoom range.

From the conclusion:

There’s a lot to like about Tamron’s most recent lens, from the build to the excellent magnification to the excellent price. The Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC provides a nice alternative to existing options, yet Canon may have upstaged Tamron with the recent announcement of the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II, a heavily updated and improved lens. Still, for those on a budget, the reality that the new Canon will cost 50% more than the Tamron might still be a compelling factor. At the same time, however, I cannot deliver complete approbation of the A034, as I felt that in some areas it underperformed my expectations. It is a sharp lens, but is clearly outclassed by the larger Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 lens. I found the autofocus a little slower than expected (the recent Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC was much faster) and also found the autofocus a little more prone to hunting in some situations.

ePhotozine reviewed the new Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD lens.

The Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD appears to be a reviewer’s darling. This $799 lens gets a glowing verdict:

Some lenses are impossible to dislike, and this is certainly one of them. It is compact and light compared to the f/2.8 lenses, performance is excellent and gives beautifully crisp images, handling is superb and the price very attractive. The Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD is a lens for any Canon or Nikon user to put very high on their list and an Editor’s Choice.

Tamron gives you 5 years warranty on their lenses. And that’s juts one of the many things the reviewers liked on the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD. The new Tamron excels in the sharpness department, has no flare, well controlled distortion, low CA, a 5 stops image stabilisation system (named VC in the Tamron universe), and many more things to like. ePhotozine gave the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD 5 stars out of 5, and it’s their editors choice.

Tamron says they are ready to make lenses for Canon & Nikon full frame mirrorless cameras

Full Frame Mirrorless

In an interview with DPReview, Tamron execs gave a clear statement. Besides talking a lot about the new Tamron 28-75mm FE (canon rumors) lens for Sony systems, they said the company is ready to build lenses for future full frame mirrorless cameras. Guess who they where addressing?

[…] Everybody is going to mirrorless. Canon and Nikon will launch full-frame mirrorless cameras, probably in the near future. When this happens, we can easily make Canon and Nikon versions of our [native] E-mount lenses. The same design could work for [multiple mirrorless mounts].

Good to know that Tamron can easily convert their lenses for a soon to come full frame mirrorless system by Canon. And that Canon will deliver “probably in the near future”.  Sony execs also are quite sure Canon will announce a full frame mirrorless camera within a year. And if both Nikon and Canon are going to launch such a camera things are going to be interesting.
