Ever Thought of a Canon DSLR as Action Camera? EOS 7D Mark II Skydiving Auto-Focus Test

When you think action camera you think small gear like GoPro’s Hero cameras, right? Think again. There is people wanting to try the EOS 7D Mark II’s auto-focus while skydiving with the DSLR mounted on the helmet (found at Action Camera Rumors).

Christian Anderl and Wolfgang Lienbacher, both Austria based photographers, together with the Red Bull Skydive Team, got the point:

[…] if this Autofocus works while you’re jumping out of a plane with it, chances are high it will work everywhere

Curious? Watch the EOS 7D Mark II‘s auto-focus performance while falling down to earth at about 200km/h (124miles/h). The 7D2’s AF holds up to what you expect from a game changer. Once more Canon is showing what they do best: cranking out real tools for real photographers (you’re right Wade).

More about the story behind the video at Christian Anderl’s blog.

The video by Youtube user Daero Lee shows what the EOS 7D Mark II auto-focus is about. A game changer!

The 7D Mark II is used at 10 fps, using AF multi-zone and AI servo tracking. See for yourself the awesome auto-focus performance of Canon’s EOS 7D Mark II.

The setting is challenging: a dance performance with fast moving subjects. The video shows what you see through the viewfinder: the scene, settings, and lightning fast little black AF points following the subjects. Impressing!

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Review and First Impression by Tony Northrup

Tony Northrup produced a 40 minutes video where he introduces the new Canon EOS 7D Mark II.

Mr. Northrup expresses his thoughts also about the recent DxOMark figures for the EOS 7D Mark II sensor. As all Canon sensors, the 7D Mark II sensor scored rather mediocrely. On the other hand this measure has little to do with real life performance (2 | 3).

Canon EOS 7D Mark II

DxOMark tested the sensor performance of the Canon EOS 7D Mark II.

In the conclusion they write:

On paper, the Canon EOS 7D Mk II looks to be a solid choice for sports and action photographers, but its sensor performance is somewhat behind the best in class, at least at low ISOs. Relatively high noise, less discriminating color, and below-average DR at base ISO all continue to hold back Canon sensors against rivals, but that’s not the case at higher sensitivities. In fact, when light levels fall, the Canon EOS 7D Mk II performs competitively, even surpassing rivals slightly. If Canon could only address performance at base and low ISO, the EOS 7D Mk II would make a thoroughly convincing all-round choice, but in this category the Sony A77 II looks to be the more compelling option.

Well, we had more enthusiastic reviews about Canon’s new APS-C flagship (1 | 2 | 3). As often, real life performance and experiences differ from lab figures. For the DxOMark’s findings have a look at the review.

Lensrental’s Roger Cicala took a Canon EOS 7D Mark II and teared it apart.

He says the “Canon 7D Mk II may be the best weather-sealed camera [he has] run across“. As you may figure out, the weather-sealing of the EOS 7D Mark II was of major interest while dissecting the camera.

Enough said. Head over to LensRentals to see all the pics and the description of how they dismantled the EOS 7D Mark II.

A Bit of Everything (7D Mark II, G7 X, TS-E 45mm, EF 8-15mm, 5D Mark III)

Photographer Michele Clentano on Capturing Photo Portraits by Recording 4K Video with the EOS-1D C – PetaPixel

Canon TS-E 45mm f/2.8 Lens Review – ephotozine

Overall, this old lens delivers excellent image quality, and a good range of adjustments for a reasonable price. However, it would be nice if tilt and shift could be rotated independently, and if it could focus closer. If you can live with these shortcomings, it is still an excellent lens.

The Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM, My New Favorite Wide Angle Canon L Series Lens – Thomas Hawk

[…] I have way more fun shooting this lens at 8mm and have found that beyond traditional fisheye subjects, this lens has opened up a whole new world to me when it comes to shooting more abstractly — especially with architecture.

Canon IXUS 265 HS/ELPH 340 HS review – Camera Labs

The IXUS 265HS / ELPH 340 HS is now the flagship model in Canon’s budget compact range. It’s the only one with a CMOS sensor, the only one to shoot full 1080p HD video, the only one with Wifi and it packs a very capable 12x stabilised optical zoom into a very compact and stylish body – always the trademark of the IXUS / ELPH range.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II: A professional’s opinion (by Bettina Hansen) – DPreview

Its 10fps maximum frame-rate makes shooting with the EOS 5D III feel like slow motion. For me, personally, I still prefer the 5D III and the EOS-1D X because I like a full-frame sensor. However, though I absolutely hated shooting with the first 7D, I found the second iteration shockingly reliable, fast and sharp – overall it is a very good contender for the price.

Jacques de Vos on uncompressed HDMI with the EOS 5D Mark III – Canon Pro Network

The latest firmware update – Version 1.2.1 – for the Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR includes a host of important new features, including uncompressed HDMI output, and one of the first videographers to take advantage of this was underwater specialist Jacques de Vos. He has established a considerable reputation for shooting still images and video with a Canon EOS 7D whilst free-diving and has recently switched to the EOS 5D Mark III, with very favourable results. CPN video writer James Morris spoke to Jacques de Vos to discover his first thoughts about shooting uncompressed HDMI output with his EOS 5D Mark III underwater rig.
