Canon UK press release:

Canon launches the Student Network to help students take their next step with imaging

United Kingdom, Republic Of Ireland, 23rd September 2013 – Canon today unveils a new program to help engage students in the world of photography. The Canon Student Network (CSN) is designed to help aspiring photographers studying photography or equivalent courses to take their next step with imaging and further develop their love of photography along with real world business advice.

The initial phase of the programme, which launches today, rolls out to 11 universities across the UK and Ireland and provides tailored experiences, opportunities and offers to help the students develop, as their course progresses.

The opportunities for students include experience events to find out what it is like to be a professional photographer such as “Shoot the Show” at London Fashion Week. There will also be events for those interested in most types of photography including sports, wildlife, portrait and wedding.

Education including tips, tricks and business advice from noted professional photographers via seminars around the country and online are also available along with unique offers. There is the opportunity to network with prospective companies and agencies to help establish contacts suitable for a working life in photography once they complete the course.

A headline photo competition, where the winner will have the opportunity to have their photo used as the main image within a major Canon campaign including print, outdoor and online advertising as well as in store, is a huge opportunity for any budding photographer.

The opportunities, benefits and training compliment and progress with the courses the students are studying. As the programme has been developed in partnership with the universities, it ensures the programme will be of benefit to the course work set and future employment prospects of the students.

Access is easy and free for eligible students. Those in first year simply need to be studying photography or equivalent course, within one of the initial 11 roll out universities and sign up to the free Project 1709 – Canon’s beta online imaging management system. Students in their second year will also be required to own a current Canon DSLR and lens. A course for students in their third year will be rolled out in the next academic year, there will be no extra requirement for students in order to join.

To sign up students need to register on http://www.canonstudentnetwork.co.uk/.

Tokina Joins the Cine Lens Party with a 16-28 T3.0 lens

16-28 T3.0

DSLRs are becoming increasingly more important for video productions. No surprise that lens manufacturers want to join the market. The latest entry comes from Tokina, with their 16-28 T3.0 Cinema lens. The lens appears to be an adaption from the Tokina AT-X 16-28 f/2.8 PRO FX lens. The Cine lens will be available for EF and PL mounts. The price published on Tokina’s site (translated) is somewhat puzzling: 580.000 Yen, which roughly gives 4350 Euro or $5437. That’s a high price tag, especially if you consider that the AT-X 16-28 F2.8 PRO FX goes over the counter for 900 Euro/$699. The PL version is set to be released end of September, the EF version for end of November.

The specs:

Focal length 16-28mm Filter Size 112mm

Firmware Update for Canon EOS-1D C Will be Released in October

EOS-1D C

Canon will release a firmware update for their Canon EOS-1D C camera by mid october. The update brings lens aberration correction and audio recording with line input.

A new firmware update is available for the EOS-1D C. Firmware Version 1.3.x adds new functionality incorporating the following features and modifications:

Lens aberration correction with EF Cinema Lenses: Communication between Canon EF Cinema lenses and Canon cameras has had a few effects on the operation of the EOS-1D C. The following features are now available as menu options:

  • Peripheral Illumination Correction: This feature maintains even brightness from corner to corner of an image. This will virtually eliminate vignetting and any other unevenness of light across the image.
  • Chromatic Aberration Correction: This feature reduces color fringing in areas of an image with high contrast color. It reduces color bleeding, which is easily noticeable at edges and degrades perceived image quality.
  • In addition, communication between the lens and camera body will allow the F-stop to now be seen on the viewfinder. Focus position and F-stop will also now be recorded by the camera.
  • Flicker caused by manual aperture adjustment has been reduced with this update, this could cause slight underexposure which may result in exposure compensation in some cases.

Sound recording with Line input:

  • After requests from users in the field, audio recording through a mini plug (3.5mm) connected to the external microphone terminal is now supported. This will allow for the recording of audio sources other than microphones, such as mobile devices or audio players. The standard input level is -8 dBV and can reach an input signal of up to +6 dBV. Sound recording levels are adjustable at 64 sound-recording levels.

Service support start date is anticipated mid-October 2013. For information regarding the EOS-1D C firmware update (which must be performed by a Canon Factory Service center) please contact Canon Cinema EOS Support at 1-855-CINE-EOS (246-3367).
