Canon Celebrates Explorer Of Light Stephanie Sinclair At The Imaging Alliance ‘Salute Photographers Who Give Back’ Event

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photojournalist to Be Honored for Her Acclaimed Work, Too Young to Wed, at the Third Annual Awards Ceremony in NYC

MELVILLE, N.Y., November 6, 2017 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to celebrate world-renowned photographer and Explorer of Light Stephanie Sinclair at the third annual Imaging Alliance’s “Salute Photographers Who Give Back” Awards, Nov. 6 at the SVA Theatre in New York City. Stephanie will be honored for her program Too Young to Wed, a nonprofit multimedia platform that seeks to raise awareness of child marriage while empowering girls in these circumstances to express their creativity through photography. Sinclair will be among three honorees at this year’s ceremony. In addition, images from Too Young to Wed created by child marriage survivors will be on display at the World Photo Press exhibition from now until November 26 at Dupont Underground in Washington, D.C.

The Imaging Alliance will salute Sinclair alongside two other professional photographers: Brooke Shaden and Jerry Ghionis. The trio is being honored for using their talent and passion to give back and heighten awareness of important social and cultural issues through the power of imaging. In addition, one SVA student who has used photography to educate and create awareness will be awarded the Anthony M. Ruotolo Photojournalism Award. The event will feature presentations by the three honorees followed by a short Q&A with the audience. Robert Caplin of The Photo Brigade will serve as master of ceremonies.

“It is with the utmost pleasure that at this year’s Imaging Alliance Awards we get to celebrate our very own Explorer of Light Stephanie Sinclair and her amazing work,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A. “With her Too Young to Wed initiative, Stephanie has dedicated her life for the last decade to inspiring change through imaging. We truly feel that she represents the embodiment of what our company stands for—an unwavering dedication to help people tap their creativity to reach new heights of their potential.”

Stephanie Sinclair is a New York-based photojournalist who has gained international acclaim for her attention to human rights issues. Through her photography and her Too Young to Wed foundation, she has shone a spotlight on issues such as child marriage, female circumcision, war and polygamy. Too Young to Wed provides visual evidence of the human rights challenges faced by women and girls around the world. The mission is to amplify courageous voices and build a global community dedicated to ending child and forced marriages, and to support positive change for these girls through programs such as literacy classes and the Tehani Photo Workshop. Named after an 8-year-old child bride in Yemen, this five-day workshop brings together 18 brave child marriage survivors to help them gain the skills to become budding photojournalists while learning tools to manage their trauma, express themselves, advocate for girls’ rights and become mentors to subsequent workshop participants.

Since the creation of the program in 1995, Canon’s Explorers of Light have been leaders in their respective fields, garnering awards and accolades for their work. These individuals work with Canon extensively as representatives, ambassadors, educators and as role models for aspiring creative artists. They participate in workshops, seminars, gallery showings and personal appearances throughout the United States.

In addition to her honor at the Imaging Alliance Award, images of Too Young to Wed will be on display at the World Photo Press exhibition. World Photo Press exhibition, on display from now until Nov. 26 at Dupont Underground in Washington, D.C., is a partnership with the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), which named Sinclair its 2017 Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism award winner for her extensive work on child marriage. Along with images from Too Young To Wed created by child marriage survivors, the exhibit will feature the work of Louisa Gouliamaki and Nicole Tung, who earned honorable mentions from the IWMF, which highlights the role of leading women photographers and videographers as well as show powerful images of the struggles of young women suffering from tremendous inequality.

Monsoon IV is new jaw-dropping time-lapse of North-American storms (shot with Canon EOS 5DS R)

mike olbinski

Another great work by storm chaser Mike Olbinski (other works we featured).

Mike describes his latest effort:

This year I ventured far and wide. Phoenix never saw a good dust storm all summer, but I still was able to capture a few good ones in southwest portions of the state. The cover photo for this film was halfway to Yuma standing in the middle of Interstate 8 watching an ominous wall of dust roll down the highway towards me with lightning flashing behind it. It was an incredible moment.

One bonus this summer was a few successful chases up at the Grand Canyon. Finally. A couple of gorgeous sunsets, rain dumping into the Canyon, lightning at night, Milky Way…it all worked out and I’m stoked for the footage I captured there that made it into this film. I also ventured over into New Mexico twice to chase some wonderful, plains-like structure to end the monsoon this year.

All told I covered about 13,000 miles and chased as far west as Desert Center, CA, as far east as Wilna, NM and as far north as Tonelea, AZ. And two great storms down in Organ Pipe National Monument, which is only about 10 miles from Mexico.

[…]  I shot over 110,000 frames of time-lapse and likely only half of it ended up in the final cut. The editing has taken me weeks […]

Mike Olbinski used two Canon EOS 5DS R along with Canon 11-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm and Sigma Art 50mm lenses, and Manfrotto tripods. The final product was edited in Lightroom with LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro. Enjoy!

Canon Launches New 4K UHD Portable Zoom Broadcast Lenses

The New Broadcast Lenses Feature 45x Zoom, The Highest Zoom Ratio in Their Class1

MELVILLE, N.Y., November 1, 2017 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today two new portable 4K UHD broadcast lenses for use with broadcast cameras featuring 2/3-inch sensors: the Canon CJ45ex9.7B 4K UHD Portable Zoom Lens provides users with the highest zoom ratio in its class1, and the Canon CJ45ex13.6B 4K UHD Portable Zoom Lens features both the highest zoom ratio and longest focal length in its class1.

The Canon CJ45ex9.7B and CJ45ex13.6B lenses both feature a broad 45x zoom ratio and wide-angle focal length of 9.7 mm to 437 mm and 13.6 mm to 612 mm, respectively. Both telephoto zoom lenses are ideal pieces of equipment for Electronic Field Production (EFP) broadcast applications including wildlife/nature, sports, live events, documentaries, and helicopter/aerial. Additionally, both lenses are well suited for mid-size broadcast vans and surveillance applications.

“As the demand for more 4K UHD broadcasting continues to grow, Canon is constantly developing high-quality products to provide producers and broadcasters with outstanding optical performance,”said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A. “The CJ45ex9.7B and CJ45ex13.6B both support a variety of broadcast applications, enabling users to capture breathtaking 4K UHD image quality in a form factor that is both lightweight and compact.”

The CJ45ex9.7B and CJ45ex13.6B both employ Canon proprietary optical design technology that features optimal lens positioning using both fluorite and Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) glass. The use of these lens elements enable users to capture high-quality 4K UHD imagery from the center of the imaging field to the periphery and across the entire zoom range, making them ideal for a variety of shooting situations—from close-up shots all the way to wide shots such as panoramic views of large venues.

The form factor and operational controls of the lenses will be very familiar to users who have previously operated one of Canon’s award-winning HD lenses. The lenses are designed to meet the demands of the on-the-go broadcast shooter where lightweight and compact are key advantages, comparable to HD super telephoto lenses. Both lenses feature three 20-pin connectors for zoom control, focus control and access to the virtual terminal, even in full servo setup with focus and zoom controllers connected. Futhermore, a 16-bit absolute value encoder in the digital drive unit helps eliminate the need for any initialization, enabling users to simply turn on the camera and begin shooting.

Availability

The CJ45ex9.7B 4K UHD Portable Zoom Lens is scheduled to be available in April 2018*, while the CJ45ex13.6B will be available in May 2018*. Canon releases Q3 2017 Financial Results, EOS 6D Mark II sales good, company claims

Canon published financial results for Q3 2017. Results are not bad for the Japanese Company, though “sales volume of interchangeable-lens digital cameras declined compared with the previous year“. However, apparently “newly launched models as [shoplink 46185]EOS 6D Mark II[/shoplink] enjoyed solid demand”. Can’t be such a bad camera after all.

The company describes their global market situation as follows:

As for the markets in which Canon operates amid these conditions, demand for office multifunction devices (MFDs) overall remained at around the same level as the previous year amid the increase in demand for color models, while demand for laser printers continued to recover in emerging countries, centered on China, as the economy recovered. Demand for cameras shrank moderately, while demand for inkjet printers remained at the same level as the previous year. Additionally, there was solid demand for medical equipment, mainly in developed countries. Within the Industry and Others sector, demand for flat panel display (FPD) lithography equipment and manufacturing equipment for organic LED (OLED) displays enjoyed strong growth.

More specifically, the Image System Business

Within the Imaging System Business Unit, although sales volume of interchangeable-lens digital cameras declined compared with the previous year, owing to the shrinking market, unit sales of such newly launched models as EOS 6D Mark II enjoyed solid demand, allowing Canon to maintain the top share in the U.S., Japan, and major countries in Europe. As for digital compact cameras, sales of high-value-added models enjoyed solid demand; supported by healthy demand for the newly launched G9 X Mark II, part of the high-image-quality PowerShot G-series lineup, leading to an increase in unit sales from the same period of the previous year. Additionally, the decline in sales in the previous year due to shortages resulting from the Kumamoto earthquake contributed to the increase in unit sales for this year. As for inkjet printers, the newly designed home-use TS-series and refillable ink tank models that target emerging countries enjoyed strong demand, resulting in unit sales increasing from the same period of the previous year. As a result, sales for the business unit increased by 9.0% to ¥270.5 billion year on year, while operating profit totaled ¥39.2 billion, a year-on-year increase of 31.1%. Sales for the combined first nine months of the year totaled ¥795.3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3.2%, while operating profit totaled ¥116.9 billion, a year-on-year increase of 26.1%.
