New lens mount options for EOS C300 Mark II (and links to C300 Mk2 white papers)

Canon cinema EOS C300 Mark III

Canon Professional Network posted a short article about the recently announced option to change the mount type of the Canon EOS C300 Mark II (B&H Photo | Adorama) from the native EF mount to EF with Cinema Lock or to a PL mount. Even better: you can switch back.

For the more technical oriented, the Canon Digital Learning Center published three downloadable white papers written by Larry Thorpe (Senior Fellow, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Professional Engineering & Solutions Division, Canon USA). The white papers are titled ‘Image Performance Enhancements in the EOS C300 Mark II’, ‘Extended Recording Capabilities in the EOS C300 Mark II’ and ‘Ergonomic and Operational Enhancements to the EOS C300 Mark II’.

CPS advisory:

Owners and purchasers of the Canon EOS C300 Mark II will soon be able to benefit from a new lens mount service option which offers the capability to change the 4K Digital Cinema Camera’s original EF mount to EF with Cinema Lock or to a PL mount and back again.

After purchasing the C300 Mark II, service mount options will soon be available from Canon Regional Competence Centres (RCC) in France, Germany, Italy, Sweden or the UK. These services are expected to be available in October 2015; further details of how you can purchase the lens mount options will be communicated shortly.

Some bits about Canon’s 120MP DSLR prototype

canon 120MP dslr

Photography Bay’s Eric had a close look at Canon 120MP full-frame DSLR prototype, announced last week.

The development model shown at Canon Expo 2015 in NYC operates at ISO 100 only, and produces RAW files as big as 210MB. The model name registered in the firmware is EOS Y038. Working with such resolutions and files sizes may pose some challenges to monitors and computers used for post-processing.

The elephant in the room is the question when we will see this sensor go into production. My guess is, earlier than we may think. Though limited to ISO 100, the sensor built-in in an EOS 5Ds body is working good enough for Canon to showcase it and to let people play around with the camera. My bet is Canon will release a DSLR with such a sensor towards the end of 2017, more likely in 2018. From this perspective, the [shoplink 27765]EOS 5Ds[/shoplink] and [shoplink 27766]EOS 5Ds R[/shoplink] with their 50MP sensor were just the beginning of Canon’s raise to become the high resolution leader (again).

Canon Rebel SL2/EOS 200D specifications suggestion (24MP, tiltable screen, smaller than SL1) [CW3]

Rebel SL2

We have a list of possible specs for the upcoming Canon Rebel SL2 (EOS 200D in EU, most likely). As usual take everything with a grain of salt.

  • 24megapixels, same sensor as 750D
  • up-tiltable LCD, it doesn’t tilt down
  • Even smaller than SL1
  • Wireless battery charging, old charger still supplied and works as before
  • Autofocus system the same
  • More colors available
  • Lower price than the introduction price of SL1
  • New battery type

Moreover, the source said that the Rebel SL2 “has a feature to show the current focal length of a zoom lens on the LCD (works for nonzooms too) as long as it’s an EF-S or EF lens that can report this data electronically“. It’s interesting to note that the Rebel SL2 coukd be smaller even than the SL1 (world’s smallest DSLR).

I was expecting the Rebel Sl2/EOS 200D for the end of August but nope. I am pretty sure Canon will announce it in time for the X-Mas business.

If you want let, me know what you think.
