Dustin Abbott, Zeiss Otus 1.4/55mm APO Distagon T* Review

I directly compared the Otus to the flagship 50mm lens from Canon, the [shoplink 177]EF 50mm f/1.2L[/shoplink]. I praised that lens in many ways, and I do think it has more to offer than some have given it credit for. […] But at the same know that in every measurable head to head comparison (other than autofocus!) it was no contest. The Otus simply destroys it. The [shoplink 20221]Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART[/shoplink] series lens is somewhat better competition in terms of sharpness, and (to a lesser extent) contrast, but in overall image quality it falls short of Otus. The Sigma ART is a very nice lens, but, ironically, it isn’t nearly as “artful” as the Otus 55. The Otus has not only the biting sharpness and overall contrast but also adds a truly beautiful out of focus rendering that just seems to produce more “creaminess” than any of the lenses I stacked it up against.

LOOK3 2015

Canon press release:

Held from 10-13 June in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, the 2015 edition of LOOK3 – the renowned photography festival originally conceived by Canon Master Nick Nichols – is promising to be the biggest and best yet…

Larry Fink, Walter Iooss, Vincent J. Musi and Piotr Naskrecki are just some of the many great photographers at this year’s event. Curated by Kathy Ryan, Director of Photography at The New York Times Magazine and Scott Thode, independent curator, the 2015 festival promises to be visually extraordinary and exhibiting artist and festival host Vincent Musi can’t wait to welcome visitors.

Visitors to LOOK3 will be greeted by the festival’s traditional ‘TREES’ exhibition, this year featuring large scale prints by Piotr Naskrecki which are suspended from the trees in Charlottesville’s historic centre.

“In a time when great photography is being created the world over, LOOK3 has always been about celebrating the people behind the camera,” he remarked to CPN.

Edit: EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R still not available for pre-order at Amazon EU.

This morning we reported that the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R will start shipping worldwide starting mid June. Now we got the confirmation, at least for the US market.

B&H Photo updated their Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R product pages. It says: “Will begin shipping Sun, Jun 14 (subject to availability)“. Remember that orders will be filled on a first come first serve basis. If you still didn’t order the EOS 5DS or EOS 5DS R, then this may be the right moment.

Based on what I have been told, various big European retailers are expecting first EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R batches more or less by the end of next week/beginning of the week after. Guess this is valid also for other retailers around the globe, especially in the USA.

Keep in mind that shipping dates may also be delayed because of unexpected issues. However, I am pretty confident both the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R will start shipping all over the globe from  mid June, with some delays to the last June week for smaller countries or markets Canon considers not a priority.
