LOOK3 2015: a time for celebration and reflection

Larry Fink, Walter Iooss, Vincent J. Musi and Piotr Naskrecki are just some of the many great photographers at this year’s event. Curated by Kathy Ryan, Director of Photography at The New York Times Magazine and Scott Thode, independent curator, the 2015 festival promises to be visually extraordinary and exhibiting artist and festival host Vincent Musi can’t wait to welcome visitors.
Visitors to LOOK3 will be greeted by the festival’s traditional ‘TREES’ exhibition, this year featuring large scale prints by Piotr Naskrecki which are suspended from the trees in Charlottesville’s historic centre.
“In a time when great photography is being created the world over, LOOK3 has always been about celebrating the people behind the camera,” he remarked to CPN.
“No greater example of that is Mary Ellen Mark, who’s recent passing reminds me of how important it is to honour these legends of photography. Mary Ellen was a celebrated artist one year, a teacher the next and in the audience at another. Her work will live on forever but you realise how precious time is with these larger-than-life people. We’re all saddened and our community will miss her spirit.”
Celebrating originality
LOOK3 will celebrate the work of this year’s featured artists with exhibitions and on-stage presentations at the Paramount Theatre in central Charlottesville. These intimate artists’ talks provide a rare opportunity to hear internationally renowned photographers speak candidly about their influences, processes, and inspiration. Book signings and a chance to meet will follow each talk.
“I’m proud of being able to help bring our community together in this way and I’m beyond thrilled to be a featured artist as well as the master of ceremonies,” Vincent Musi admitted. “It’s the first time I’ll be showing my own work on the stage and it’s a little scary to put yourself out there in that way.”
Nurturing new talent
On Thursday, 11 June LOOK3 will present Innovation Labs, Workshops, and Portfolio Reviews for early-career photographers, university photography students, and high school photography students at the Jefferson School City Center. The generous contribution of LOOK3’s supporters enables all educational initiatives to run free of charge. LOOK3 will underwrite 60 seats for high school students, 30 seats for early-career photographers, 25 seats for university students, and 80 portfolio reviews.
From June 12-13, LOOK3 will present WORKS, two evenings of projected visual essays at the nTelos Wireless Pavillion by established and emerging photographers. A showcase for vital and innovative international photography, WORKS presents a dynamic cross-section of photography genres from journalism to fine art.
Portfolio reviews
Portfolio Reviews are powerful and often career-defining experiences for photographers. LOOK3 will offer 80 20-minute portfolio reviews free-of-charge to early career photographers on a first-come-first-served basis. Reviewers are all leaders in their field and include Mike Davis (Alexia Tsairis Chair for Documentary Photography at the Newhouse School, Syracuse, NY, USA), Janna Dotschkal (Associate Photo Editor for National Geographic online), MaryAnne Golon (Director of Photography, The Washington Post), James Estrin (Senior Staff Photographer for the New York Times) and Anil Ramchand (Senior Editorial Director at Corbis). One-to-one reviews are intended for early career photographers (defined as within the first five years of professional practice).
Trees exhibition
The annual ‘TREES’ exhibition is now a hallmark of the Festival, with large-scale photographs suspended high in the trees along Charlottesville’s outdoor pedestrian mall. The 2015 TREES exhibition will feature the work of Piotr Naskrecki, a photographer and entomologist based at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology and will hang until July 9, 2015.
