Canon 18-45mm f3.5-5.6 Lens for Mirrorless Camera

The Japanese blog Egami (click here for Google Translation) found a patent by Canon for a 18-45mm f3.5-5.6 lens for APS-C-sized sensors that should fit on mirrorless cameras.

Does that mean that Canon will not deliver a mirrorless system camera or does it mean Canon will soon deliver a true mirrorless system cam?? Is the G1 X Canon’s only answer to the growing mirrorless phenomenon? Let’s hope not!

Some specs:

  • spherical aberration ~0.1mm
  • astigmatism < 0.2
  • wide-angle distortion < 11%
  • chromatic aberration ~0.6μm

Canon shows pre-production Samples of new Lenses at WPPI 2012

This is a Canon press release. Samples of the recently announced new EF lenses will be shown at the Wedding Photographers Trade Show 2012 starting today, February 20th, in Las Vegas:

WPPI 2012 will be the first U.S. trade show where visitors will be able to see Canon’s latest EF-series interchangeable lenses: pre-production samples of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM, and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM lenses will be shown under glass.

Hmm, «will be shown under glass»? Does it mean no one will be able to test the lenses on a cam? Unfortunately, the press release also states that

also on display at WPPI 2012 is the Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR camera

But hold on! Maybe you can put your fingers on the D1 X:

Among the newest Canon EOS Digital SLR cameras on hand at WPPI 2012 is the EOS-1D X Digital SLR, designed to bring professional photography to its next level of success and achievement.

Three lenses, and a funny coincidence

Ok, let’s start with the coincidence. On February 7th Canon announced three new lenses, two primes and a standard zoom lens: 28mm f/2.8 IS USM, 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and the 24-70mm f/2.8 II USM. All three lenses are upgrades from previous versions. So, before dipping in details and specs, let me tell you where the coincidence lies. No idea? Well, on the same day Nikon announces the brand new D800 full-frame DSLR. Still no idea? Ok, I will tell you what I think. These lenses are made i) for full-frame cameras, ii) have improved resolution and iii) are high quality lenses for high quality camera bodies. Still no clues where I am aiming? Did it happen just by chance that Canon announces these lens the same day of Nikon’s D800 presentation? No! I think it allows us to think that an exciting new Canon camera is on the way (ok, not really a new fact).
