Canon EOS 70D vs Nikon D7100 Comparison Shootout (video)

Thanks to reader Thierry I can feature a pretty interesting and well made Canon EOS 70D vs Nikon D7100 shootout video (34 minutes) made by YouTube user MichaelTheMentor.  The video compares all the features of both cameras, it is a good guide for those who have to decide which one to get (the EOS 70D, obviously!) – it lasts 34 minutes but it is definitely worth to be seen if you are interested to learn about the EOS 70D. The EOS 70D is a damn well made all-round DSLR and I am glad Canon did finally deliver a truly innovative product for enthusiast and semi-pro photogs. Have a great day.

To Agree or not to Agree: A Highly Controversial Canon Rebel SL1 vs 5D Mark III Comparison

Please note: here at Canon Watch I am trying to give you all information that is Canon related. That means I will also feature articles and post you may not agree or that just appear to be absurd. That’s the case with the comparison I am talking about below.

Ken Rockwell posted an article that is heating up minds on photography sites and forums. Basically he compared the Rebel SL1 ((price & specs)) with the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens to an EOS 5D Mark III ((price & specs)) with L-grade glass (the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II). He claims that for real life settings there is no much difference in image quality. Rockwell’s argues that the software in Canon’s entry level DSLR is so good that you can barely spot the difference. I do not agree with him, but you have to judge by yourself. It “may” be true that for some settings a 5D Mark III and an L-glass are an overkill, but there are lots of settings where a full-frame sensor and a high quality optic make a BIG difference. Check the two crops below and read Rockwell’s post for the whole story. Have a great day!

DPreview Canon EOS 70D Studio Test Scened Added to Ongoing Review

DPreview added a set of studio test scenes to their ongoing review of the Canon EOS 70D. All files can be downloaded in full resolution for your viewing and pixel-peeping pleasure.

The EOS 70D is an amazing DSLR. It’s for sure the best all-round, multi-purpose APS-C DLSR on the market, and kudos Canon: you made it right. Unfortunately since I got mine I didn’t have enough time to shot and learn about the EOS 70D. It’s simply a great camera and all reviews have confirmed it so far. To get an overview below is a DigitalRev video about the EOS 70D.

I am in San Francisco now and will soon go back home. Just have a little more patience and posting will start again as usual. Have a great day.

Canon EOS 70D Full Video Review (LearningCameras)

The video above is a 22 minutes review and test of the Canon EOS 70D by LearningCameras. It is a pretty good introduction to all the features of the EOS 70D.

I am still on travel in the US, so again I apologise for not posting as usual. However, got my EOS 70D today and even if I did not yet have time to try it out as I would like I am very satisfied with the first impression. Canon brought back to the XxD line a lot of features they took away when they released the EOS 60D three years ago (AF micro-adjustement, just to mention one). The things I like most so far: electronic level in the view-finder, AD micro-adjustement, solid build (though not as rugged as the 40D and 50D), flip screen, 19 points AF, WiFi, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF. I think Canon did also a great j0b with the positioning of all the controls and buttons: everything appears well positioned and designed. The touch screen works fine (if you want to use it, I do not).

The EOS 70D is for sure the most innovative camera Canon made since years, a truly well designed piece of gear. I am not into videography but I am sure videographers will love the EOS 70D.

Which Lenses are Best for Your Canon EOS 70D? Ask DxOMark

EOS 70D

After part 1 (STM lenses) of their recommendation of about which lenses best fit on your new Canon EOS 70D, DxOMark published part 2, related to primes and zooms. On top of their ranking there are the amazing Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM (price & specs) and Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM (price & specs). They are followed a bunch of Canon primes, among others the EF 35mm f/2 IS and the EF 85mm f 1.2L II USM. First ranking among the zoom lenses is (no wonder) the awesome Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM followed by Canon’s EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM. Click here to see all rankings.

More and more Canon EOS 70D reviews show up. This time it is UK based ephotozine to provide a review. They outline the excellent colours and image quality, very good battery life (920 shots, although if not using live view, which consumes more battery), AF micro-adjustement, the robust body, and obviously the Dual Pixel CMOS AF (among other outstanding features). An excerpt from the conclusion:

For videographers the 70D with touch screen control over focus point will be extremely appealing, and the microphone socket is useful, although no doubt some will wish for a headphone socket as well. For those that are looking for a true Digital SLR with an optical viewfinder, combined with very good live view, and excellent video focus (with STM lenses), the Canon EOS 70D delivers, whilst also delivering that all important Canon feature: High Image Quality. The Canon EOS 70D delivers excellent colour and has almost everything you could wish for in a Digital SLR.

But the EOS 70D is impressive also if you are just interested in shooting stills. I want one soon! :-)
