Well, it’s amazing how fast DPReview got their comprehensive Canon EOS 5D Mark IV review ready. They write:

[…] the 5D Mark IV[…] is the most refined 5D yet […] This is a camera that will stand up to years of abuse and churn out images with appreciably better quality (and at a faster rate) than its predecessor. The touch screen and Dual Pixel AF offer users more shooting options, and the built-in Wi-Fi and NFC will be an important addition to those working in the field. It may not be a revolutionary update, but this evolutionary update will find its way into the hands of thousands of working professionals, and it will reward them with better and more reliable results than ever before. For those that don’t need it, the Mark IV won’t be an exciting camera. But those that do now have a new and improved all-rounder that will last them for years to come.

Next, Amateur Photographer’s first impression:

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV hasn’t stunned us in the same way as the EOS 5D Mark III did when it first arrived in 2012. Whereas the EOS 5D Mark III was quite a major step up from the EOS 5D Mark II, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV feels more of a modest upgrade. Although it adds appealing features and is undeniably the most advanced EOS 5D-series model we’ve seen to date, my lasting impression from a brief hands-on with the camera is that it’s not quite as cutting edge or revolutionary as hoped. There’s often a strong case for skipping a generation – current EOS 5D Mark III owners who don’t necessarily require 4K video functionality and are content with the image quality produced by their 22.3-million-pixel CMOS sensor may find it hard to justify an upgrade, whereas original-EOS 5D and EOS 5D Mark II users who didn’t make the move up to the EOS 5D Mark III are much more likely to find the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV an appealing option.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DxOMarked, best Canon sensor so far, still behind competition

eos 5d mark iv

DxOMark put the new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV under examination in their labs. The EOS 5D Mark IV scores better than any other Canon DSLR, getting a score of 91.

However, Canon’s new full-frame DSLR is still behind the competition. The Nikon D810 and Sony a7R II, which score 97 and 98 respectively.

Writes DxOMark:

[…] Canon has certainly caught up with the competition, but remains behind the top sensors in Sony and Nikon cameras. The Sony A7R II offers over two-thirds of a stop better color (26 bits compared vs 24.8 bits), but only marginally better dynamic range (13.9 EV vs 13.6 EV), thanks to the big strides forward Canon has made in this regard.

[…] Canon enthusiasts and pros alike have been chomping at the bit for the latest upgrade to the 5D series. For stills photographers, the EOS 5D Mark IV doesn’t disappoint, boasting an array of enhancements to the autofocus, metering system, and resolution, as well as adding intriguing new features such as Dual Pixel RAW mode.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV teardown by LensRentals

canon eos 5d mark iv

All pictures © LensRentals and used with permission.

LensRental’s Roger Cicala and Aaron Closz did it again. They completely disassembled the brand new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.

They write:

The weather sealing on the Canon 5d Mark IV appears pretty robust […]  The shell of the camera has an interlocking construction with lots of pins and clips and more screws than previous Canon cameras. This makes it kind of a pain to get into, but I’m sure it adds to the shell’s overall strength. It might make it more weather resistant if the parts are held together more tightly […].

There are more chips, and more and heavier connectors moving electrons from board to board than even the Canon 5Ds cameras have. This kind of makes sense because there’s lots of new stuff in here: a touch screen LCD, dual-pixel technology, WiFi, GPS, the list goes on. […]  There are some empty spaces that aren’t packed full of electronics. In other words, this camera probably could have been a bit smaller but Canon wanted to keep the form factor the same.

Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens review (ephotozine)

Sigma 50-100mm F/1.8

Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, Canon Canada, Canon USA

At a glance:

  • Canon EF Mount/APS-C Format
  • 80-160mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Aperture Range: f/1.8 to f/16
  • One SLD and Three FLD Elements
  • One High-Refractive Index Element
  • Super Multi-Layer Coating
  • Hyper Sonic AF Motor
  • Internal Zoom and Focus; MF Override
  • Rounded 9-Blade Polycarbonate Diaphragm
  • Fixed, Rotating Tripod Collar

ephotozine reviewed the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens, another crazy and hot lens for APS-C DSLRs  in Sigma’s new “Art” line-up.

In the conclusion they write:

The Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC Art lens is a fine example of the lens maker’s art. The zoom range is limited, it’s heavy and it could perhaps focus a little closer, but apart from that it would be difficult to find fault with any aspect of its performance.

The sharpness reaches outstanding levels across the range of focal lengths, distortion is low, CA well controlled and the overall appearance of the images is very appealing. The clincher is, of course, that f/1.8 aperture, which opens up a realm of possibilities in low light and for control of depth of field. A lovely lens that’s a pleasure to use.

If I am not wrong, the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM is one of two unique lenses for APS-C having a constant f/1.8 over the zoom range, the other lens being the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM.

DPReview posted a set of sample pictures shot with the new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (a pre-production model I guess). Moreover, raw conversions has been made with a very early beta build of Adobe Camera Raw. Hence, image quality may not represent the final shipping version.
